Choose a major that matches your exam score

On July 28, the Ministry of Education and Training will hold a meeting and announce the minimum score for university and college admission in 2015. This is the threshold score for schools to base on to set the score for receiving application files for admission to the school. Thus, after receiving the Certificate of Exam Results, based on the results achieved, candidates can register for admission to their first choice at the school they wish to study in the period from August 1 to August 20.

Sharing with candidates, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Nghia, Deputy Director of the Department of Examinations, Ministry of Education and Training said: "With a score range of 5 to 7 points, candidates who want to be admitted to university must achieve at least 5 points in 1 subject or more, because the minimum score for admission this year may be higher than last year's admission. Especially, for top schools, or professions chosen by many candidates, the score for receiving application for admission will certainly increase."

According to Mr. Nghia, up to now, the general rule is that the industry with high entrance scores is still high (around 23 to 24 points), the average score is from 19 to 22 points and the lower score is from 15 to 17 points.

Referring to last year's benchmark score, if any student has a score that is more than 2 points higher than the annual score, then they can feel completely secure in applying.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, head of the training department of Foreign Trade University, said that with this year's score range and admission method, Foreign Trade University plans to increase the standard score by at least 0.5 points.

Ms. Thuy said that candidates should refer to last year's benchmark scores and pay more attention to the input volume of each major to balance their wishes appropriately. In the first round of admission, when choosing a maximum of 4 wishes, they should not only focus on choosing all popular majors. They should follow the updated information on the school's website. Candidates living far from Hanoi can ask acquaintances in Hanoi to submit or withdraw their application on their behalf to be on time, especially on the last days of the application deadline.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Huu Lap - Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology said: "With this year's exam score range, the expected floor score will be higher than last year by a maximum of about 2 points. Therefore, candidates must pay attention to registering their first choice. When submitting their application, they must follow the information from the registered school. If they consider that they may not pass their first choice, they must withdraw and transfer their application to another school immediately."

Associate Professor Hoang Minh Son, Vice Principal of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that in addition to high or low scores, students need to choose schools and majors that are suitable for them. Even top schools have many different majors with different scores, a lot.

Selecting candidates for the first round is the main thing.

According to the 2015 Admission Regulations, candidates are allowed to register for up to four majors in order of priority, are allowed to register for a number of subject combinations specified for a group of majors, and are allowed to change their major preferences or withdraw their application to submit to another school during the admission period.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Van Nghia, Deputy Director of the Department of Examinations, Ministry of Education and Training, when candidates apply to a school, the school will consider the first major they register for first. If they pass the first major, they are required to study it. If they fail, the school will consider the next majors the candidates register for. The Ministry requires schools to publicly announce the admission conditions, including the combination of subjects for admission, the quota for each group, and whether the admission scores between the subject combinations are equal or have a difference in scores. Depending on that, candidates choose the most beneficial subject combination to submit their application.

Therefore, many universities have carefully calculated to come up with their own admission methods to both save effort and avoid "fake" candidates.

This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has built a combination of subjects for admission based on the traditional exam blocks of the University (A, A1, D1) and added other three-subject combinations (Math-Chemistry-English, Math-Chemistry-Biology). Math is present in all the subject combinations for admission and is an essay exam.

Nguyen Phong Dien, Head of the Training Department of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the results of the Math exam will be a reliable measure of the candidates' logical thinking ability, which is very necessary when studying engineering majors at the University. Therefore, Math is chosen as the main exam subject (coefficient 2) when considering admission to some training majors.

Mr. Dien said that this year, the School will basically complete the university admission process in the first admission round (the first 20 days of August 2015) and will only continue to admit a few groups of majors in the second round according to the registered enrollment quota.

The University of Commerce considers admission based on the University's floor score for each combination of admission subjects and each training major/specialization. Candidates who meet the University's floor score but are not admitted to the registered training major/specialization can register to transfer to another training major/specialization (with the same combination of admission subjects) with remaining quotas upon admission.

This year, the Banking Academy reserves 90% of its annual quota for admission to candidates who have graduated from high school, with a total score of the combination of subjects in the national high school graduation exam that meets the Banking Academy's requirements for one of the following combinations: Math, Literature and Foreign Language (English); Math, Physics and Foreign Language (English); Math, Chemistry and Foreign Language (English); Math, Physics and Chemistry. The Academy's admission score is expected to be higher than last year.

University and College Admissions 2015 , the Ministry stipulates that after the exam results are available, each candidate who registers for the exam for the purpose of university and college admissions will be granted 4 Certificates of exam results with the red seal of the university hosting the exam cluster.

Candidates can only use the Certificate of Exam Results used for admission to their first choice to register for 1 university or college. Each school, candidates can register for a maximum of 4 choices in majors ranked in order of priority from 1 to 4.

Within 20 days of the first admission round, if necessary, candidates can adjust their registered application at that school or withdraw their application to apply to another school. Candidates who have passed the first admission round are not allowed to apply for additional admission rounds.

If not admitted to university or college in the first round of admission, candidates can use 3 Certificates of exam results for additional admission to register for a maximum of 3 schools; in each school, candidates can register for a maximum of 4 wishes in the majors ranked in order of priority from 1 to 4.

Candidates should pay special attention that during each additional admission round, candidates are not allowed to withdraw their application. After each admission round, if they are not accepted, candidates can withdraw their application to register for the next admission round.

According to regulations, every 3 days/1 time, schools must publicly announce on the school's electronic information page the number of candidates who have registered for admission. Based on the number of applications compared to the number of admission quotas, candidates can make timely and appropriate decisions.

For the next additional admissions, candidates must submit their application within the announced time, to schools that match the subject combinations, and have quotas.
