Dear Doctor, are the impacts from society, from the press, from culture or what else makes young readers change, they live in a hurry and are not selective? They read less books, instead they read sensational news or surf social networks.
- Today's young generation is surrounded by so much information, so they need to filter it. When they believe in too much, intellectuals or people with high culture can filter the information, so people only read the necessary articles.
But for young people who do not have the necessary culture, do not have a large cultural background, how can people filter them? They just stuff everything into them.
It’s like eating, people with scientific knowledge eat very scientifically, they think about this and that substance, but for normal people, they just eat to be full, they eat anything, they still eat contaminated things because if they find it delicious, they eat it. It must be admitted that social networks, sensational news… all of those things have a great impact on young people.
I have researched the young generation through my state topics and discovered that today's young people also really like serious and serious news, but the news must be extremely profound and written by experts for people to listen immediately.

The young Vietnamese generation is still eager to find serious topics because I myself was invited by the City Youth Union and the Central Youth Union to many lectures and talks with Hanoi youth and youth across the country.
They talk about issues even revolutionary ideals, about living culture, youth behavior culture very passionately. But we are lacking articles that talk about issues that readers need.
People need cultural issues, for example. For example, what should people do in difficult times?
For the future, many young people today are confused, not knowing whether to choose a career to make a living or a career to follow their dreams?
- What do they teach abroad? If young people encounter difficulties, I simply say that if they are temporarily unemployed for a period of time, the first thing they must do is find a job to survive, and then during that survival process, they can continue to think about and plan their long-term life to achieve their dreams.
In foreign countries, people do not choose their jobs, a master can sell bus tickets. I met a master who used to work in the post office, but when he got pregnant and had email, suddenly the mail died, no one sent handwritten letters anymore, so he was unemployed and he sold bus tickets.
When he met me, he wanted me to help him continue his doctoral thesis. You see, selling bus tickets to survive, to support his wife and children, and to support himself while still pursuing his dream. That's how a person's life should be, because many young people nowadays just demand to have a job that matches their major.
First to exist and then to nurture one's dreams are two things that people must always do.
Another problem, some people think that today's youth seem to lack sophistication and depth. The youth world has too much influence, causing many young people to lose the categories, as the Doctor said, cultural background?
- No, it's not. Actually, it's not a technical error. I use the Internet myself, and I have to thank the Internet for making my research much easier.
For example, in the past I had to make long and arduous trips, but now I can sit at home and attend international meetings and conferences online.
Then I work with international colleagues online, only when I go on field trips or on the ground do I have to go. The world also uses Facebook, also uses the internet more fiercely than I do, but they don't consider it a bad thing.
The problem of Vietnamese youth today is Facebook addiction, spending too much time on Facebook...
Social networks are obviously a double-edged sword, it affects the spiritual life of young people quite deeply, causing them to sometimes have self-delusions?
- Social networks have two sides. Its positive side is to create a very large community around the world so that we can relate, know the thoughts and feelings of people, of humanity.
Another positive aspect is that it helps us to concentrate young people on a movement, such as a volunteer movement, a sacrifice movement, a charity movement, very quickly.
Third, it helps people answer questions that they cannot find by themselves, and they can find friends there. But besides that, it has many consequences, because it is a virtual world, so it is easy for people to have illusions about themselves.
Keyboard warriors have people who think they are famous because they have become a person that Facebook has called for, that is why there are phenomena like Ba Tung, Le Roi. They think they are famous but they are actually scandalous phenomena.
No real human being can live in the virtual world, we have to live in the real world and help real people.
Is there any way to change that?
- To change that, the problem is culture. This is the culture of behavior. People must behave properly in life and this is what we must educate today's youth.
Second is the problem of studying. Vietnamese youth today are too lazy. When I went to teach at the Royal Australian University of Science, at universities they worked from 8am to 10pm before leaving school, including students.
After class, people go to the library. Extra classes and university courses also exist there until 10pm. Therefore, the second priority is studying. If you have a bachelor's degree, you must study for a master's or doctorate.

Third, it is learning foreign languages, if we do not learn foreign languages we are deaf and dumb in the world.
The fourth is the issue of reading culture and the fifth is the issue of physical training. Those are 5 issues of behavior towards oneself.
Without health, your dreams will become bricks of hell. I consider those 5 issues as culture.
Once people have invested in these 5 issues, they will not have much time to surf Facebook and the internet, unless they are doing research or replying to friends.
With your experience in teaching, what advice do you have for young people? Should they study while playing? Should they focus entirely on studying while still in school? Or should they study while working to gain experience after graduation?
- I think that students should take advantage of part-time jobs, but if they can do jobs that are relevant to their major, that's good.
For example, journalists go to editorial offices to work part-time. They gain experience and broaden their education. As the old saying goes, “learning goes hand in hand with practice.” If we can both “practice” and earn some extra income, I think that’s the best.
Foreign students still work part-time, no problem.
- Thank you, Doctor.
