In previous articles shared by teachers of the Foreign Language Department about the Toeic test format, general test-taking strategies and materials for review..., in this article, I would like to share more specifically with students tips for taking part 7 of the Toeic test and a small tip to prepare mentally to achieve the set goal.
Dear students, listening and reading are two passive skills and can be completely self-taught. If in the listening part we do not need to pay much attention to time, then in the reading part, reasonable time management is extremely necessary. Part 7 of the Toeic test is the last part, when our concentration decreases while the difficulty level increases. So how can we do the best in this part?
First of all, we need to understand the structure of the test. This part has a total of 48 questions in single passages (28 questions) and double passages (20 questions). The main content can be business letters, notices, advertisements, orders, complaints, news, etc. To do it quickly and effectively, we follow these two steps:
· Read the questions first to get an idea of the information you are looking for.
· Answer the questions from easy to difficult according to the levels below:
1. Specific information questions : This is the easiest type of question in the test, asking specifically about information in the reading passage and using “Wh-questions”.
For example:
Where can you buy tickets?
For which event can you get a 10% discount?
What can of food does the restaurant serve?
2. Vocabulary questions : Test your ability to understand vocabulary in context.
For example :
The word “ available ” in paragraph 2, line 3 is closest in meaning to…
3. Main idea and inference questions : We need to understand the main idea of the reading passage and make logical inferences.
For example:
What is the purpose of the letter? (main idea question)
Where does David most likely work? (inference question)
What is implied about the company? (inference question)
What is suggested about Thomas? (inference question)
4. “NOT” questions: These types of questions take more time because we need to check all the answers carefully to find the incorrect information.
For example:
What information is NOT included on the Web site?
Which of the following is NOT true?
Above are 4 types of questions in the test, identifying them is not difficult and you can analyze them yourself when doing the test. All questions have the same number of points, so you should choose to answer the easy questions first. Each question in part 7 should only take a maximum of 60 seconds, if you cannot find the answer within that time, quickly move on to another question. And remember, do not leave an answer blank, that is, even if you cannot find the answer, you still randomly choose an option to achieve the correct answer. Another important thing is that, for the reading comprehension category, the more synonyms you know, the better your reading comprehension will be, because the questions or answers will use synonyms with words in the reading passage to distract the candidate from finding information. Therefore, the more vocabulary you have, the better your test will be. If you want to take the exam to get a certificate at IIG Vietnam, after the course and review time, you should take the exam immediately, avoid waiting a while to take the exam, at that time, you will forget some knowledge.

To conclude, I would like to share a small tip that I have applied to myself and found effective, which is to keep my mind relaxed and alert before doing the test.

You can drink some coffee or tea about 30 minutes before to help you stay awake and avoid drowsiness, especially during the afternoon exam. If you can choose the exam date (according to the IIG schedule for example), choose the exam date when you feel most productive. Some people study or work better in the morning, others in the afternoon. This is quite important and has a significant impact on your score. Imagine the pressure in the exam room, even though you have carefully prepared your knowledge, if you look tired that day, it will take a lot of effort to study. Above are the tips I want to share with you, I wish you all the best results.
