Everyone knows that time is precious. However, many of us, especially students, are not using our time properly. That may be part of the reason why your study results are not as expected. Therefore, through this series of articles, the author wants to focus on answering three questions. First, have you allocated your time properly? Second, what are the main reasons why you waste time? Third, how to manage time effectively?
MSc. Duong Minh Tu - Lecturer of Faculty of Business Administration
“If you want to know the value of one year, ask a student who failed the university entrance exam.
To know the value of one month, ask the mother who gave birth to a premature baby.
To know the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly magazine.
To know the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To know the value of one minute, ask the person who just missed the flight.
If you want to know the value of one second, ask the person who just escaped a serious accident.
To realise the value of one-hundredth of a second, ask the athlete who won a silver medal at the Olympics...”

Have you allocated your time properly?
For students, besides the main job of studying, there are many activities that take up your time such as making friends, using social networks, watching movies, listening to music, working part-time and other personal activities... However, not everyone knows the principles of how to allocate time for the above activities reasonably. To answer this question, you need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Record a time diary for a typical study day using the following sample template:
6am: Wake up
6:00 - 6:30: Personal hygiene
6:30 - 6:45: Breakfast
….
23:00: Go to bed
Step 2: Classify the jobs listed in step 1 into 3 groups:
Group 1: Tasks related to personal needs such as: personal hygiene, eating, makeup, laundry, etc.
Group 2: Activities related to family, friends, society, hobbies such as: meeting friends, using social networks, watching movies, listening to music, surfing the web...
Group 3: Work related to study: in-class study, self-study and part-time work (if any)
Step 3: Measure the time for activities in the 3 groups above.
Add up the time you have allocated to the activities in the three groups above and convert it into hours. Then, divide that number of hours by the total waking time of the day to get the percentage.
For example: A student spends 4 hours a day on group 3 activities. That student sleeps 8 hours a day (16 hours awake) and will be calculated as follows:
% Group 3 time = 4÷16 × 100 = 25%
Step 4: Compare your time rate with the following reference rate
To know the value of one month, ask the mother who gave birth to a premature baby.
To know the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly magazine.
To know the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To know the value of one minute, ask the person who just missed the flight.

Step 4: Compare your time rate with the following reference rate

Because the main task of students is to study, many experts advise you to spend at least 50% of your time each day (excluding sleeping time) to study. Normally, your class time is about 4 hours/day, which means you need to spend an additional 4 hours each day to self-study or to add things necessary for your future work such as foreign languages, information technology, soft skills... Besides studying, you also need to allocate time for entertainment activities such as watching movies, listening to music, using social networks... However, you should limit the time for these activities to 3-4 hours/day.
After doing the above steps, many of you will find that you are not allocating your time properly. So what is the main reason why you are wasting time and how to fix it? Please read the following article.
