One of the major barriers for Vietnamese people learning English is a limited vocabulary, which makes them afraid to communicate. This not only affects the results of the English test of the learners. Moreover, many students, although they have worked very hard to learn vocabulary, still do not improve much. Perhaps their failure is partly due to their learning method. Especially with the specific TOEIC output standards of the school, when asked about taking the TOEIC test, students often have the same opinion: the grammar is not too difficult, but the test has many new words that make them "overwhelmed".
No matter how “shocking” we are, we still have to face reality; therefore, learning vocabulary is something that cannot be ignored. This article summarizes some effective vocabulary learning methods. You can choose the way to learn words that suits you, or combine several methods together to get the best results.
1. Learn words with the same root (Word family): In English, there are often groups of words that are related to each other and come from the same root, for example:
Employ (v): hire,
Employment (n): work
Employer (n): boss, tenant
Employee (n): employee
Unemployed (adj): unemployed
So, when learning vocabulary, look it up in the dictionary and check if there are any other words related to that word with the same root. Learning words this way helps you not only learn one word but also learn many other words, and avoid confusing word types.
2. Learn words through pictures: This method will help you remember longer. A typical example of using pictures associated with vocabulary is children learning English. All young children when learning English learn words through pictures. This method is very effective and has been applied for a long time, with many people. Try it, the results will exceed your expectations!

3. Learn words by topic: when learning words, you can choose a big topic (for example: traveling) and then find words around that topic. This way of learning words helps you remember words systematically, and can distinguish many different words belonging to the same topic.

4. Use a notebook: When learning a word, don't forget to write it down in a small notebook so you can carry it with you at all times. You can test your ability to remember words on the bus on the way to school. Moreover, writing words down in a notebook also has another meaning: In addition to learning vocabulary, you can write down phrases or sentences containing that word to know how to use the word correctly. Is this really necessary for you?
5. Practice regularly: Many people share that they study words very hard, but after a while they forget them, and when they see them again, the words are like new. This is not wrong! It's simply that you don't use them often. One of the useful ways to remember new words you've learned is Reading. Find texts that contain new words, and study how to use them in the text. This will help you remember the words for a long time, and you can even use them fluently.
For example, if you are learning TOEIC vocabulary, look for texts in Part 7 (Reading comprehension). The appearance of TOEIC vocabulary in this part will help you improve your vocabulary significantly.

In conclusion: Each learner has his or her own learning method. The vocabulary learning methods mentioned above are not suitable for all learners. Therefore, you should experience and discover the most effective learning method for yourself, to achieve your goals. Good luck!
