You ask why? Let's temporarily blame the Internet, Smartphones, Karaoke, Drinking, Lotte, Starbuck and all kinds of modern entertainment. You ask why again? Because that is the challenge of this era. Pleasures of enjoyment surround us, everywhere, east, west, south, north. Why do we have to endure studying when our friends go drinking, go on dates, go to Lotte? Oh, I forgot, don't tell me a sentence that every kid knows: Everything has its advantages, the important thing is not to use too much. Because, not many people know how to control themselves in this land.
LAZY
All the bosses in Vietnam are strict, they often urge their workers. Because they know, if they don’t urge, the workers will just sit around and do things perfunctorily, when the boss comes, they are busy, when the boss leaves, they smoke, even chat on Facebook. If your parents are the ones paying the workers, you will understand this better than anyone.
You ask why they are lazy, when did they start being lazy? Why? Because they have no interest in work. Because from the moment they are lazy to study, they have no knowledge to solve problems, so they do not want any more problems to happen. And that's it, the best way to not have any problems to solve is to sit around and do nothing. Working creates problems, solving problems is a step forward. But they are so afraid of having problems. If they cannot solve them, they will be scolded, humiliated, and embarrassed in front of others. So they would rather be idle, with clean clothes, clean clothes, and no stains than sweaty, sloppy, and no one wants to look at them.
LAZY TO THINK
Scrolling through Facebook is something you can do right away. If your Facebook has nothing worth seeing, nothing that moves you, nothing that makes you look back at yourself, then you are an example. If there is some interesting information, written about the current state of the country, about environmental pollution, about extinct animals, or academic articles, see how many people like it? Well, usually not many people like it. If you don’t believe me, just scroll through Facebook and you will know.
Don’t we have anything to learn? Or do we only care about selfies, which girls are pretty, which girls use 360 cameras, which guys are GAY, which places are good to play, which areas have good food, which places sell nice clothes? If your Facebook doesn’t have anything related to academics or knowledge, instead it’s 90% pictures of pretty girls and handsome guys, rest assured that you are one of the laziest thinkers in the world.
LAZY TO FIGHT
This goes without saying. No one cries for the common man. The country is going downhill, so be it. Honestly, no one cares. Those who have a heart, those who work in journalism are like lonely, autistic people. Whatever articles they write, they read by themselves, hardly anyone reads them, let alone likes and comments. After going out for Christmas, there is trash all over the streets, so they have to write about it in the newspaper, no need to feel ashamed for themselves or for this country, it's the same every year, it's in the newspaper, then it stops, because no one has the energy to say anything anymore.
Indifference is a disease of the Vietnamese. If you don’t believe it, search the article: “Vietnamese are the 13th most insensitive people in the world” 16 and you will know. They don’t want to fight. They want nothing but to enjoy what they have. We sell resources, we saw down trees, we kill wild elephants, we eat wild animals, there is nothing left for us to “spare”. Exploiting them thoroughly for this generation to enjoy, it can be predicted that within the next 10 years, they will be exhausted. But people are indifferent, letting things get worse and worse. As long as they are not in dangerous areas, or in areas with natural disasters; as long as they are not affected by anything. People are increasingly retreating to the cities, clustering together, do you see? They all eat, drink, and have fun together, then poison each other in every piece of meat, every plate of rice… But no one wants to fight! No one wants to, because they are busy enjoying this modernity.
Those are the generations that have been trained. Vietnam is one of the world's biggest spenders on education. What have they done, and how have we trained ourselves? Have we ever felt humiliated, not necessarily anything profound, just because we just threw a piece of trash on the street. Someone reminded us, and we protested: SOMEONE WILL CLEAN IT UP IN THE FUTURE. Have we ever felt humiliated because our laziness is so disgusting that even smart dogs that know how to poop in the right place look down on us?
Generations pass, and the lessons of parents become more and more practical. Don’t you find this society too closed-minded when you prepare to pack up and go to the city to study? 99.9% I guarantee you will be reminded: Be careful with your money, there are a lot of thieves; Watch your house in the dormitory, there are a lot of thieves; Be careful in Saigon, people from all over the country don’t know who is who…
You have heard it, surely, and admit that the people around you are disgusting. And you, I am calling you by name, are not necessarily any special case other than that disgusting bunch. A bunch of bad guys, smiling fake smiles at each other, hands firmly holding onto their money bags and drifting along with the flow of life. We patch up this country, patching up the torn parts, but as Luu Quang Vu said:
“There are mistakes that cannot be corrected. Patching and forcing them will only make them worse. The only way is to never make another mistake, or to make up for it by doing something right.”
But we don’t care about this teaching. We do more than that. Someone bribes, we bribe more. Someone cheats to get high marks, we are determined to know the exam questions the teacher will give. Someone litters, we litter in a sophisticated way. Someone cheats us, we learn how to cheat others. And we have a society like today. It is not good at all.
How can a nation that loathes and is wary of each other over such trivial matters have the brains to invest in more progressive things? A closed society, full of skeptical eyes, how disgusting for us!
We are lazy in everything. We are lazy to exercise, then our health is poor, our endurance is lacking, so we are lazy to study, lazy to work, sleepy when having to think and bored when having to endure. All we have is to cope, from the inside out. If we don't cope by bribing money, then we cope by buying fake degrees, if we can't do it, then we just study, and while studying we also cope with teachers. Yes, we cope with n+1 types of things. But what I find more disgusting than coping is not bothering to cope anymore, but are willing to throw garbage on the street in broad daylight, uttering obscene and lewd words in public. There are not a few of them, please don't underestimate them.
Endure! People who come out of war with tremendous endurance raise their children with indulgence. Too many people come out of war, too poor to speak of virtue, all they care about is money, making a living. That’s why we’re here. A bunch of ill-educated people. A bunch of people who are bringing this country down. It’s not their fault, forgive them. They tried to rebuild everything from the ashes. But what about us? Spoiled from childhood, never had to endure anything, and now we’re willing to sit in a cafe and gossip all day.
You know what people who drink and sit in cafes and chat often say when they meet? I just got a job there, with a salary of 4 million, but I just sit around doing nothing. Immediately, the guy across from me will say: SO GOOD!
The mindset in this country is: Sit back and relax! But rest assured, the universe is fair. This little nugget over here will be punished sooner or later if it continues to exist like that.
If you want to change the country, if you are 18 or 20 or older, you will soon be a father or a mother. So prepare for change, no matter how you were raised, make sure you become the role model you want your children to become in the future.
Don’t drink up this resource, don’t eat salty food to make your children thirsty. Don’t let generation after generation live like this. And please, don’t be so bad that you later force your children to become good people. Children learn through images, they imitate everything they see. Never allow yourself to be bad, and teach your children by saying that no matter how bad you are, you are sacrificing for their future. Because, that way is too boring, an excuse means nothing.
I know that Vietnam is not yet at the time for a revolution to reform the Vietnamese mindset. But from now until then, I hope I can help someone understand that you have to practice, endure to walk through the days of maturity. You cannot grow if you do not endure. If you want to go up, you have to endure, even if there is no one around to support you, even if everyone around is sleeping…
