A good nurse must be able to perform clinical nursing techniques proficiently when caring for patients. According to the International Nursing Association, there are 180 nursing techniques ranging from simple ones such as preparing the hospital bed to more advanced techniques such as infusion, placing urinary catheters and specialized advanced techniques such as placing coronary artery stents.

So how many nursing techniques do nursing students need to learn? In 2008, the Ministry of Health and Dutch experts held a workshop at Nam Dinh Nursing University to select 55 nursing techniques and directed schools to follow this list.

The Ministry of Health requires training schools to focus on developing professional skills and proficiency. However, the Basic Nursing program is short in duration and focuses mainly on theory. In the practical part, students only get to watch teachers guide and model and do very little work, not enough to qualify for hospital practice. Mr. Le Van Duy - Head of Nursing Department, Dai Nam University said: Practical capacity is divided into 4 levels according to Miller's pyramid: Level 1 students are prepared with practical theory in class; level 2 students watch teachers demonstrate techniques and practice for about 30 minutes; level 3 students are divided into small groups, do it themselves, make mistakes, and are helped by teachers to do it independently: level 4 students are proficient in clinical techniques on models, confident enough to practice at the hospital.

How do Dai Nam Nursing students learn 55 clinical nursing techniques?

The Faculty of Nursing, Dai Nam University, divides 55 techniques into 3 modules "nursing technique practice 1,2,3" according to the principle of learning from easy to difficult, from separate to synchronized.

Skilllab teaching method is hands-on, guiding students to self-study, evaluating students by direct observation according to checklists, and taking daily scores. Students who drop out of class must retake the class immediately or request additional classes immediately. At the end of the course, there is a skill test graded according to the scale (check lists). The passing score must be from 7 on a scale of 10.

To make the practical learning of students most effective, all students are guided by hand, practice over and over again until proficient, the Nursing Department divides into groups. Accordingly, each practical session has only 20-25 students. When practicing on the model, the class is divided into small groups of 4-5 students. Each group has a group leader to connect and work in groups. The group's score is the score of each individual.

Students will be allowed to do it over and over again, be allowed to make mistakes, and have their techniques critiqued by the group members. The lecturer only acts as a guide and concludes after each lesson…”, said Mr. Le Van Duy.
