“I chose to train doctors with Dai Nam University to join hands in solving the problem of human resource shortage, and at the same time bring opportunities to talented candidates who are passionate and want to choose Medicine as their career path but are not lucky enough…” That is the sharing of Associate Professor, Doctor, Senior Lecturer Hoang Duc Hanh - former Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health about the decision to “join” the Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University.

-It is known that after retiring from the Hanoi Department of Health, you received many job offers from medical facilities and medical training institutions. So, what made you choose the Faculty of Medicine at Dai Nam University?

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh - Head of the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University, former Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Health.

After retirement, many medical units and training institutions invited me to work. However, I chose Dai Nam University because before that, Dr. Le Dac Son - Chairman of the University Council personally invited and shared his enthusiasm for the education career in general and especially for the medical field in particular...

As for me, since the early 80s, when I first entered Hanoi Medical University, I dreamed of "wearing a white coat and standing on the podium", which means being both a treating doctor and participating in training.

During nearly 40 years of working in the health sector, including when I was working as a manager in the Hanoi health sector, I have always been concerned about the shortage of general practitioners in Hanoi in particular and the whole country in general. To solve the problem of shortage of general practitioners, for a long time our country had to conduct joint training of doctors from general practitioners, traditional medicine practitioners...

Meanwhile, the training quota of public medical schools is very low, the entrance score is high. The number of good candidates, passionate about medicine, has very little opportunity to study medicine and become doctors. That is why I always worry about a formal training form to increase the quality human resources of general practitioners for Hanoi and the whole country.

Dai Nam University is one of the few non-public universities trusted by the Ministry of Education and Training to grant a license to train in Medicine.

The Ministry of Education and Training's permission for some qualified non-public universities, including Dai Nam University, to train general practitioners is a very correct direction.

And I chose Dai Nam University to train doctors to join hands in solving the problem of human resource shortage, and at the same time bring opportunities to talented candidates who are passionate and want to choose Medicine as their career path but are not lucky enough.

Dai Nam University's steps are very methodical, solid and professional.

-As the dean, how have you and Dai Nam University developed the Faculty of Medicine? What are the short-term and long-term goals that the Faculty of Medicine at Dai Nam University is striving towards?

After 4 years of training, the Faculty of Medicine of Dai Nam University is gradually affirming its reputation and training quality when highly appreciated by students and parents.

Medical training is a very hot and difficult issue. Each training institution will have a different direction and approach. Dai Nam University is a university that develops in the direction of application - entrepreneurship and innovation. The medical industry is built and developed in an applied training environment, starting step by step, safely and firmly based on "necessary" and "sufficient" conditions such as: Training program, course outline, learning materials, teaching staff, practice - experimental equipment, affiliated practice hospital system, training organization methods, student testing and evaluation methods...

Dai Nam University has been working very systematically and professionally according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health. The training program is compared with top medical schools. Dai Nam Medical students study the same program as students of Hanoi Medical University, University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU, Thai Binh Medical University, Thai Nguyen Medical University... The modules build lectures associated with each specific output target. The learning materials are the learning materials that are being used by leading schools in the country. The permanent teaching staff are teachers from top schools who have transferred and taken advantage of the excellent guest lecturers from Hanoi Medical University, University of Medicine and Pharmacy - VNU, Thai Binh Medical University, Thai Nguyen Medical University...

The immediate goal of the Faculty of Medicine is to continuously upgrade and develop necessary and sufficient conditions, ensuring that training is closely related to practice, and that graduates have products for patients and society to evaluate and assess the quality of training. The Ministry of Health has a National Medical Council, and Dai Nam Medical students will pass the exam on that council, and this is the basis for society to evaluate the quality of Dai Nam's training, and the basis for Dai Nam to re-evaluate its own training activities.

Long-term goal: to raise the Faculty of Medicine to become a prestigious and quality medical training address in the Northern region with training quality equal to some public medical training institutions in the country and to improve foreign language proficiency, soft skills, positive attitude, discipline, lifelong health care and training habits - factors that help learners succeed throughout their lives, and be a "worth every penny" choice for candidates and parents.

Competitive advantages of Dai Nam Medical students when entering the labor market

- What is the biggest competitive advantage of Dai Nam University Medical students, sir?

Dai Nam Medical students have competitive advantages in English, soft skills and positive attitude.

When building the program and organizing training in the Medical field, we focus on the differences, such as: Prioritizing English training with a budget 4 times higher than other fields; the training program is designed to enhance the experience and application for students; developing a system of linked practice hospitals from the Central to the city level, students are "stationed" at hospitals, attending clinical training all day and working at night like a real doctor; students are able to participate in scientific research with teachers and experts right from the first years of the course; a diverse and attractive scholarship regime (100% talent encouragement scholarship, 50% tuition fee, business entrance scholarship, annual scholarship...) stimulates and motivates students to study...

In 2023, each K17 medical student who successfully enrolls will receive a scholarship of 15 million VND granted by the Vietnam Private Hospital Association - a strategic partner of Dai Nam University.

>>> SEE MORE: Successfully enrolled, each K17 student of Dai Nam University's Medical Faculty received a scholarship of 15 million VND and job referrals after graduation.

In addition, in addition to the skills of the medical students of Dai Nam University, they are also trained to develop comprehensive skills through the basic and advanced soft skills training program only available at Dai Nam; positive attitude through useful extracurricular activities; iron discipline of the army through the 28-day and night "soldiering" program right at school; the habit of exercising and protecting health for life with a different physical education program and choosing subjects according to interests...

Candidates who score 22.5 points or more are completely confident in studying Medicine and becoming good doctors.

- According to you, to study medicine, do candidates need to be in the top 28-30 points? What is the most important quality of a medical student?

To study Medicine, candidates must have outstanding academic ability, that is for sure. However, they do not necessarily have to be in the top 28 - 30 points.

Reality has shown that not everyone who gets high scores in medical school will become a good doctor. Many candidates with high scores, who are admitted to top medical schools, are eliminated when they enter school because they do not have passion, do not have enough diligence and perseverance because medical school does not only take 6 years to study but also requires lifelong learning… especially, they do not have enough patience, tolerance, love, and understanding for patients.

Dai Nam Medical students who practice clinical practice at hospitals are assessed to have the same ability as students from top medical schools.

On the contrary, candidates who score 22.5 points or more and have good academic performance (the quality assurance threshold of the Ministry of Education and Training) are completely confident to study Medicine and become good doctors if they possess the qualities and characteristics required of a doctor. Because:

Medicine is a highly specialized field of study, intelligence is only a “necessary” condition. Candidates who want to pursue this career field need to have other important qualities, such as: Thinking ability and diligence; perseverance, patience, hard work, and endurance; quickness, precision in every movement; honesty; a kind heart; courage… Not to mention the working environment in hospitals and medical facilities is very stressful and difficult, candidates who want to choose this field of study need to have good health and physical condition to be able to be on duty, work all night, and come into contact with blood without… fainting.

Medicine - the profession of saving lives, is a noble profession so it requires you to make every effort.

- Do you have anything to say to those who have, are, and will choose Medicine as their career path?

Before entering university, you should choose a major that you truly love and are passionate about. Next, you must see if you have the ability and perseverance to pursue that major to the end.

If you love and want to choose Medicine, you should be brave enough to try your hand. It is fortunate and happy that you have many more opportunities than in our time, that is, the doors of private schools, such as Dai Nam University, are open to welcome you to realize your dream of becoming a doctor.

In the 2023-2024 school year, Dai Nam University will enroll 380 students in the Medical field according to 4 admission methods.

However, you should also note that Medicine is the profession of healing and saving people, the most noble of all noble professions. No matter how society changes, medicine is always an indispensable profession and doctors are always respected by society. And having decided to choose Medicine as a career path, you need to determine the hardship, make every effort, not back down in the face of difficulties, to be successful you must sweat, cry and have a systematic study plan from the beginning.

In particular, Dai Nam teachers will always be by your side every second and minute to support and accompany you to realize your dreams. Try your best to always be in the top of the brightest candidates. Take the opportunity to win the worthy scholarships that the School always creates conditions for you, not only to encourage you in your studies but also to reduce some of the financial burden on your family...

-Thank you for sharing, Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Duc Hanh!
