Our team continued our journey. Different from the places we had been to before, this time the destination was a bit special, “Orihome Nursing Home”. The lesson we learned was that nothing is more precious than family. Those who still have their mothers, please don’t make them cry…
Our team continued our journey. Different from the places we had been to before, this time the destination was a bit special, “Orihome Nursing Home”. The lesson we learned was that nothing is more precious than family. Those who still have their mothers, please don’t make them cry…

At Orihome Nursing Home, most of them are elderly. Each person has different circumstances. Some people come here to enjoy their old age; some are sent here by their children for convenient care; some are less fortunate, they have suffered a stroke or after surgery are brought here for care and recovery... The doctors here always create a happy, cozy atmosphere like at home, always caring for and helping the elderly like their own family members.

Volunteer students of Dai Nam University and elderly people of Orihome Nursing Home.
Perhaps, the hospital lacks nothing, even more than at home, but what the elderly need is not material things but spiritual things. That is the attention, care, and love from their children and grandchildren.

Duy Manh - class 12-03, Faculty of Pharmacy shared: “I see that the elderly all have conditions but lack family affection. Some of them have psychological trauma leading to nervousness and have to stay alone in the isolation room. I feel sorry for them! When they see people coming, they chatter and I have to flatter them like children when I feed them porridge.”

Has anyone ever heard the saying “old people and children are one” , when parents are old they also need to be cared for and looked after little by little like a child. The old people at Orihome and everywhere are the same. They really don’t need anything big. What they need is very simple, very ordinary: questions, encouragement, hand holding from their children and grandchildren. So that they know they are still important to their family.

When a member of the Team sang the song “I love you, Mom”, the whole room suddenly became quiet, some of the elders cried. Perhaps, the elders cried because they were touched, saddened thinking of themselves, then felt sorry for themselves, missed their home, missed their children. The student volunteers also shed tears, tears of sympathy, or also love for the elders, or maybe because looking at the elders, they saw the image of their grandparents, or even thought of their parents when they were old.

The volunteer trip to Orihome Nursing Home left a lot of emotions for DNU volunteer students.
It is true that only by going and experiencing can we understand, Nguyen Ninh - Class 12-01, Faculty of English Language confided : "This volunteer trip is not as noisy and bustling as the previous volunteer activities I have participated in. But perhaps this is the most gentle and meaningful activity for me. I have learned to be patient when talking to the elderly, know the meaning of a smile in life, know how to cherish the things I have, especially cherish the love of my family and relatives around me".

Quynh Trang - Class 12-01, English Language Department was also moved when sharing: "Although the trip was short, it was extremely meaningful to me. It taught me to care and listen to the people around me more, especially my grandparents, who we as kids rarely talk to, because we think the generation gap is too far to understand each other . "

It can be said that the recent trip left an unforgettable impression on the hearts of DNU volunteer students. After that trip, they learned to love their families more, to care for and appreciate what they have. There is nothing more precious than family. There we are comforted and protected, a place where even if we have nowhere to go, there is still a place waiting for us to return, that is “home”. Let’s care for and love our parents while we still can.
