According to the results of the national high school mock exam organized by the provinces at the end of May, 60% of the results for the compulsory subjects were below average, which is alarming.

Up to now, the Department of Education and Training of localities has had in hand the results of the national high school entrance exam organized by the provinces at the end of May. To put it simply, the recent exam is called a "trial exam", the purpose of which is for students to get acquainted with the exam questions, test-taking methods, and even the "atmosphere" of a national exam held for the first time after many years of debate surrounding the story of whether to have a high school graduation exam or to abolish this exam; or to abolish the university entrance exam, only using the high school graduation exam scores to consider admission to universities and colleges.

Because it was a “trial exam”, the recent results did not have much impact on the “fate” of each candidate. However, what was learned from the recent exam was enough to startle anyone who cared about their children’s education, especially the upcoming “real exam”. The compulsory subjects include literature, math, and foreign languages, and the percentage of students with below average scores is quite high. Right from the beginning of the school year, when the Ministry of Education and Training decided to cancel the university entrance exam this year and only use the results of the high school exam for admission , the education sector of the provinces and schools knew the importance of the aforementioned compulsory subjects. They focused on reviewing day and night with the expectation that the students would “pass the gate” in these three important subjects. However, the percentage of students with below average scores in the aforementioned subjects is alarming.
For high schools in mountainous areas, the percentage of candidates scoring below 5 points is much higher. For example, at Tay Tra District High School (Quang Ngai), over 50% of the total 138 12th graders scored 0 points. Not long ago, in a high school graduation exam, not a single student at Son Tay District High School (Quang Ngai) passed the graduation exam. The phenomenon of “0% schools” is likely to be repeated in this year’s high school graduation exam.
Explaining why so many students got zero points and below 5 points, some candidates, including teachers, said that this "trial" test was too difficult for their level. However, the head of the Quang Ngai education sector, Mr. Doan Dung, commented: "This test was moderate, not too difficult, except for the physics subject which was a bit difficult, but such results were due to the fact that students in some schools in mountainous districts had almost no grasp of knowledge, studied vaguely, and some even knew nothing. Meanwhile, in the plains, the passing rate was 60-70%. This correctly assessed the strength of each school and each student." Mr. Dung has long been known as a strict person in exams, and is also very allergic to "achievement disease", so the above comments can be considered objective.
There is still more than a month left until the “real exam”. There is still enough time for teachers and candidates to “correct mistakes” and learn useful lessons from the recent exam. Hopefully, the “real exam” will not repeat the “0% school” story like the recent mock exam.
