Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal, Dai Nam University shared: "Virginity is a woman's private property, not a man's"
- Miss, what is your opinion about virginity? In your opinion, is virginity a measure to evaluate a woman's virtue?
The ancients had a saying: “A virgin is worth a thousand pieces of gold”. According to feudalism, men and women should not touch each other, a girl must preserve her virginity until her wedding night and must endure punishment and contempt from the world if she accidentally “loses her virginity”. In our generation, this custom is still maintained because according to the old concept, virginity is the measure to evaluate a woman’s virtue.
Today's society is much more civilized. Everything is more open, respect for the individual is promoted, and women's virtues are no longer judged by virginity. However, the issue of virginity is still a HOT topic, showing that it has, is, and still has an impact. For example, when a woman is in love, she is not alert and knowledgeable enough to maintain her "giving" which can easily lead to painful consequences. Obviously, if young people are equipped with knowledge about sex and good reproductive health, they will know how to protect themselves, avoid diseases, avoid unwanted pregnancies... and the situation of abortion and infertility will not be as painful as it is today.
I do not advocate it but cannot deny that, if you have enough knowledge, premarital sex is also one of the factors contributing to future marital happiness because sexual harmony helps make married life happier.
- Virginity is a woman’s private property, not a man’s. However, Vietnamese men are still too concerned about virginity; when in love, they want to “take possession” of her, and when choosing a wife, they want to be the first. So, what is the reason for this, ma’am?
When I taught soft skills to students, in a question related to virginity, 40 out of 50 male students answered that virginity was not important in their girlfriends. This shows that young people have had and are having a more “open” and positive view of a girl’s “virginity”. In the case you asked, I think it is a small number and most of those guys have the last name “So”, love with the purpose of “possessing” rather than taking virginity as a standard.

Dai Nam University pays great attention to sex education and reproductive health for students.
-It is an undeniable fact that sex is a need and young people have sex before marriage is becoming more and more common. In your opinion, instead of prohibiting it, what educational measures should families take to minimize the negative consequences?
In fact, all parents love and want the best for their children. However, sex is a normal physiological need of humans, and it is difficult to forbid it. So instead of forbidding it, parents should openly share with their children their views and guide them with basic knowledge about sex and reproductive health to protect themselves and avoid bad consequences.
-How do you evaluate the current situation of sex education and reproductive health for university students?
I don't know much about other schools, but at Dai Nam University, the school pays great attention to sex education and reproductive health. We have included this issue in the soft skills curriculum for first and second year students; organized conferences, seminars, invited famous psychologists and obstetricians to share with students; at the beginning of each school year, the school's Board of Directors disseminates this issue to staff, lecturers, especially homeroom teachers, to convey information to students. And what makes me extremely reassured is that teachers at Dai Nam University are very close to students, ready to learn, listen and share with them, including sensitive issues related to sex and reproductive health.
Thank you very much for your interesting sharing!
