The quality of "supply" cannot meet the "demand"
According to the 2014 Vietnam IT White Book, it is estimated that by 2020, Vietnam will need about one million IT workers, but currently the total number of employees working in this industry is only over 440,000 people.

Information technology (IT) training at universities is facing great challenges due to the rapid pace of change in this field of study.
According to a report by Gartner (a leading IT research and consulting company), Vietnam is currently in the top 10 countries in Asia-Pacific and 30 in the world in software outsourcing and development. Accordingly, by 2020, Vietnam aims to train and develop nearly 20,000 engineers and technicians to meet the development of the electronics industry. However, although the number of IT students graduating each year is not small, the proportion of the number meeting job requirements in businesses is still limited.
Analyzing the reasons why the quality of “supply” cannot meet the “demand”, Dr. Luong Cao Dong – Principal, Head of the Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University commented: “The reason is that most students are only trained in theory; there is very little professional practice. Therefore, after graduation, students often lack professional skills and are especially not familiar with new equipment and technology, so businesses often have to spend 3 to 6 months to retrain them”.

According to Dr. Luong Cao Dong, IT training is currently facing a huge challenge because this field of study is characterized by a very rapid rate of change. “In reality, after 4-5 years of studying at university, much of the knowledge students gain in school is outdated as soon as they graduate, mainly due to the slow updating of training programs and the lack of technological equipment to keep up with developments,” said Dr. Luong Cao Dong.

In order for students to keep up with the latest changes in technology, schools must constantly update their curriculum, coordinate with businesses and large research units, and provide students with self-study and lifelong learning skills so that graduates are always ready for the changes that are taking place.
“ Therefore, the training goal of IT students at Dai Nam University is different from that of large universities, which is to train students to have the working skills to immediately enter the labor market after graduation - that is practical skills” - Dr. Luong Cao Dong said.

In order to help students not only learn theory, all specialized subjects of the Faculty of Information Technology at Dai Nam University are built with project projects to help students practice actively using the knowledge and skills learned in specific exercises. With each project, students will have to complete from planning to implementing problem solving. In addition, students also practice doing exercises with projects. These projects do not necessarily have to be too big, but can just solve problems that students may encounter in the future work process.
“Through doing these exercises, students’ professional skills will also increase and they will work better. Then they will be more confident in their future work. When they go to work and encounter big problems, they will be confident in solving them,” said Dr. Luong Cao Dong.
According to Dr. Dong, the highlight of this teaching method is that in addition to being taught theory with the latest equipment, students can also apply that knowledge to solve specific exercises, with practice time accounting for half of the total study time in class. Technological equipment conditions are also an important factor for students to practice professional skills and be able to integrate early into the labor market.

The Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University has equipped a system of modern and convenient practice classrooms to help students access new technology. The Dai Nam University Lab is invested with 5 high-configuration Dell servers (CPU: 2cpu/12core, 24 ths 2.66Ghz RAM: 64G (8G*8) ECC DDRAM 3, HDD: 2*2TB WD RE, 2 x RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet, Power: 2*750W), 2 CISCO WS-C3750G Switches (24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4 SFP), 5 Cisco 2811 Routers, 5 Cisco Switches (WS-C2960-24-S 24), 1 Draytek Vigor3300B+, 2 FPT fiber optic lines with 2 static IPs and many other practice equipment.
“We hope that through a good and new equipment system that is suitable for the technology being used in the world and in Vietnam, students will have the opportunity to access the latest technology. From there, many third-year students of the Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University, have been able to participate in the labor market,” Dr. Luong Cao Dong happily said.
