Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old Swedish girl who is a symbol of youth climate activism, gave a speech at the 24th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 24) in Poland in mid-December. The speech woke up global leaders.
In a nearly five-minute speech titled “ You are stealing our future,” Greta accused politicians: “You say you love children above all else, yet you are stealing their future right in front of them.”
Therefore, Greta believes that if we cannot find a solution within the system now, we need to change the system. “We are not here to beg you to care about us because you did not care about us in the past, you will not care about us in the future… We are here to tell you that time is running out, it is time for change, whether you like it or not. Power belongs to the people” – Greta emphasized.

Greta Thunberg became known in the fall of 2018, after calling for student protests against climate change. She also decided to make changes in her life to set an example, such as stopping eating meat, installing solar panels in her house and starting a family vegetable garden.
With the Climate Strike movement calling for action on climate change, Greta has demanded that governments take stronger action against global climate change. “I want politicians to prioritize climate change and act on it as a crisis.”
Greta's campaign continued to gain popularity on social media with a movement called Friday for Future, calling on students to speak out against climate change every Friday.
Greta’s initiative has been responded to by thousands of children around the world. Thousands of young people have gone on strike, protested in front of parliaments or local elected bodies in Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Germany… Greta Thunberg has become a new symbol of the fight for climate, for international commitments in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
After two weeks of intense work, the 24th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 24) has come to an end with the adoption of a book with standard regulations to implement the 2015 Paris Agreement to keep the Earth's temperature from increasing by more than 2 degrees Celsius and even at 1.5 degrees Celsius. Despite many different opinions, implementing the book will bring benefits to countries, especially coastal countries vulnerable to climate change. |
