Successful research on Excel Accounting software for teaching and learning specialized accounting

Recognizing the role and importance of accounting with Excel, the Accounting Department of Dai Nam University has successfully researched Excel Accounting software to serve the teaching and learning of specialized accounting subjects, such as: Financial Accounting 1, Financial Accounting 2, Financial Accounting 3, Tax Accounting, Management Accounting, Graduation Reports... In particular, the Faculty's Excel Accounting software can also be applied in medium and large enterprises.

DNU Accounting students perform accounting tasks on Excel and professional accounting software right in the classroom.

The Faculty of Accounting, Dai Nam University is a pioneer in applying information technology to accounting training.

Dr. Le The Anh - Head of the Accounting Department of Dai Nam University said: “Currently, organizations and businesses are applying information technology to accounting work. Businesses can use packaged commercial software from software companies or use Excel or use a combination of packaged software and Excel. Students who want to understand the nature and accounting process, have a job after graduation, and be able to work immediately need to do accounting with Excel. When students understand the nature and accounting process from Excel, they will be able to use all professional accounting software in businesses…”

Dr. Le The Anh added: In order for students to graduate with sufficient knowledge and skills to use accounting software, while still in school, students must perform accounting tasks on Excel and professional accounting software. Thereby, helping students distinguish the similarities and differences between the two software as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

According to Dr. Le The Anh, using the available resources on Microsoft Office, Excel, to carry out accounting work is not only economically meaningful but also helps students and users develop creative thinking. Using basic Excel functions flexibly has helped students design an accounting file to do very simple practice exercises such as: If function, Vlookup function, Sumif function, Sumifs function, Max function, Left function... With those basic functions, students can also create a complete accounting file for a business...

The structure of some basic functions in Excel used in accounting work has been Vietnameseized by students of the Accounting Faculty for application as follows:

- The If function has the structure =If(If, then, otherwise)

- The Vlookup function has the structure =Vlookup(Object pattern;Search area;column order;0)

- The Sumif function has the structure =Sumif(conditional area containing sample object; sample object; sum area)

- The Sumifs function has the structure =Sumif(Sum calculation area; conditional area containing sample object 1; sample object 1; conditional area containing sample object 2; sample object 2;… conditional area containing sample object n; sample object n)

- The Max function has the structure = Max(number 1, number 2, …)

- The Left function has the structure =Left(text, n)

Students of the Accounting Faculty of Dai Nam University practice at the Finance - Banking and Accounting - Auditing Practice Center right at the school.

To effectively apply these basic Excel functions to accounting work, students do not use each function individually but flexibly combine the If function with the Vlookup function, the If function with the Max function, and the If function with other functions.

Excel has become a very effective tool in accounting work and is being used by many foreign companies while Vietnamese businesses pay little attention to Excel.

02 admission methods to Accounting major at Dai Nam University

- Method 1: Consider the 2022 high school graduation exam scores. Use the results of 03 subjects from the high school graduation exam results according to the admission combination;
