Volunteers from Dai Nam University participate in directing traffic on Vu Trong Phung street.
Located in the center of Thanh Xuan district, Vu Trong Phung street is one of the “hot spots” for traffic jams during rush hour. During rush hour, the volume of people and vehicles participating in traffic on this street is very large. Therefore, traffic jams have become a nightmare for everyone when passing through this street during rush hour.
Witnessing the scene of students and residents struggling and stuck for hours on this street, the leaders of Thanh Xuan Ward proposed to the Board of Directors of Dai Nam University to have students volunteer to help with traffic flow during rush hour. Realizing that this was a necessary task; a good opportunity for students to experience reality, raise awareness and form a culture of traffic participation, the School Board of Directors agreed and directed the Youth Union to implement it.
“Only by directly participating in traffic direction and flow can we fully understand the shortcomings in the current traffic culture. To participate in traffic safely, everyone needs to understand and have a firm grasp of the law. This is a great opportunity for Dai Nam University students to improve their knowledge of traffic laws, raise awareness and form a culture of traffic participation. Although there are still many difficulties in having to complete their studies and stand in the rain and sun, which can affect their health, but realizing the benefits of participating in traffic direction, the school leaders have encouraged both mentally and materially for students to participate in traffic direction. Hopefully, this small act will contribute to promoting and forming self-awareness and culture when participating in traffic to everyone …” Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal of Dai Nam University shared.
Great experience of youth
Every day at 5 p.m., people see the blue shirts of DNU volunteers appearing, coordinating with Thanh Xuan Ward police to regulate traffic. They line up in long lines, dividing Vu Trong Phung Street into two lanes, holding flags and blowing whistles, patiently following the road to keep the street clear during rush hour.

Witnessing the volunteer team of Dai Nam University on duty, we realized their agility, enthusiasm, and sense of responsibility that is worth learning.
Talking about the reason for participating in traffic direction and flow, Ngo Thi Hong Nhung - a student of K12, Dai Nam University confided: "My parents once strongly opposed my decision to participate in traffic direction. They were worried that this job would affect my studies and that I would be in danger while on duty. However, after I explained and expressed my desire to experience it, my parents understood and supported my decision. In addition to helping the streets become more open and reducing traffic accidents during rush hour, participating in traffic direction also helps us better understand the law to participate in traffic safely and in accordance with the law."
According to the information we have recorded, 2/3 of the team members are female, many of whom are first-year students, so they are still confused about lane separation, especially when faced with objections from road users. “ There were times when the team was separating lanes, and some people who did not understand our work cursed and made things difficult for us. They scolded us for being silly and meddling in other people’s business… At times like that, we just kept quiet because time and work did not allow us to explain, ” Hong Nhung said.
Despite facing many negative reactions from traffic participants, the members of the Team were not discouraged, still enthusiastic and persistent in their duties.

“Unexpected” changes from traffic participants
From feeling annoyed and reacting, the people in this area have started to get used to the image of students directing traffic after school hours. Instead of being irritable, annoyed, and scolding, they have cooperated more actively following the direction of the volunteers. Many passersby expressed their respect and admiration for the meaningful work of the young people of Dai Nam University. They gave them raincoats and snacks to fight hunger so that they could continue to complete their tasks.
