Foreign languages are the “key” to success.
The famous Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said: “Limiting language is limiting vision”. In today’s era of globalization, not knowing a foreign language is a huge disadvantage for young people, because most opportunities to acquire new knowledge for self-development depend largely on foreign language skills.
Along with professional knowledge, soft skills and information technology, foreign languages are important factors that make up the "key" to success, helping students after graduation to work in many important positions and in any country in the world.
The actual survey also shows that young people who do not have the advantage of foreign languages, no matter how good their professional qualifications are, are very likely to "lose points" with employers. And of course, when choosing between a candidate who has both professional qualifications and foreign language skills and a candidate who only has professional qualifications, employers will favor the candidate who satisfies both criteria.
Understanding the importance of foreign languages, Dai Nam University attaches special importance to foreign language training for students. Dai Nam University is one of the first universities in the North to apply the TOEIC 450-point output standard. In order for students to learn foreign languages, the University is willing to reduce unnecessary general subjects to increase the number of English credits in the training program of the majors.

Is learning English at university difficult or easy?
When entering university, many new students have difficulty in approaching and mastering English learning methods. The reason is that students still take this subject lightly and do not have a truly effective learning method .
Sharing about this issue, MSc. Pham Thi Oanh - Deputy Head of the English Language Department, Dai Nam University said: " For a long time, English has become an invisible fear for students because of incorrect learning methods. Instead of achieving the goal of mastering listening - speaking - reading - writing skills, students focus too much on grammar. Many students learn English with a coping mentality, studying only to pass the exam, so the effectiveness is very limited..."

The English Language Department of Dai Nam University regularly organizes competitions to create a useful playground for students.
According to Ms. Pham Thi Oanh, to learn English effectively, students need to love and be interested in this subject. In particular, understanding and mastering the learning method is very important.
“ Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, learn English every day, learn everywhere, every time; learn with many different methods. Consider English as daily food and drink, daily practice will help students improve their English ability very quickly. You can learn online with English learning software, join forums, clubs or self-study through entertaining games. If you have the will to learn and determination to learn, you will definitely master the method very quickly…” Ths Oanh shared.
To help new students easily grasp the method of learning English at university, lecturers of the English Language Department have simulated effective English learning methods through fun games to practice confidence in communication, increase memory, English perception and pronunciation...
And to solve the problem of pronunciation and listening skills for students, lecturers in the Faculty always encourage students to focus on listening a lot, listening and repeating, imitating the phonetics and intonation of native speakers . Besides, the pronunciation practice of Dai Nam students does not stop at listening and repeating but also has to go into each syllable, look at documents to clearly see the difference of each syllable compared to Vietnamese to pronounce correctly. When practicing pronunciation, students need to:
“Speak slowly and exaggerate the syllables when speaking, and pay attention to the movement of your lips and tongue to recognize the difference when pronouncing each word. You can record your voice and listen to it again to recognize mistakes and correct them. In addition, practicing speaking English regularly with classmates and teachers contributes a lot not only to pronunciation but also to increasing reflexes and confidence when communicating…”, said Ms. Pham Thi Oanh.

Besides mastering the right learning method, practicing listening and pronunciation, improving the right attitude when learning English of new students plays an extremely important role in curing the disease of losing the root.
Studying for the purpose of passing exams in high school is a negative motivation and puts a lot of pressure on students, causing fear and hatred of English. Therefore, lecturers of the Faculty of Foreign Languages Dai Nam University always encourage students to build a positive attitude and passion for English in order to learn most effectively.
