Part 1. Why don't schools teach Photoshop and we have to learn it ourselves?
The concept of “Learning to change” is the process of transforming and enriching oneself by collecting and processing information from the surrounding environment. This is to help learners acquire knowledge and skills to form or transform themselves. This is not only done during university studies but according to the philosophy of education for the 21st century, which is “lifelong learning”.
With the extraordinary progress of information and communication technology, it has been estimated that the amount of information and knowledge has been increasing exponentially (for basic sciences, knowledge doubles every 5-7 years, and for new sciences and technologies, knowledge doubles every 5-7 months).
In that situation, the way of learning in general and especially the way of learning at university must change. If in the past people could use 4 or 5 years of university to equip a student with a fund of knowledge about a certain advanced profession so that he could use it almost throughout his professional life, today that is a fantasy. With the rapid development of science and technology, the life cycle of all technologies is very short, the knowledge acquired through a few years of university study becomes outdated very quickly. If we still focus on the goal of equipping knowledge, no matter how many times the university study time is extended, it will not solve the above-mentioned contradiction. In that situation, there is no other way but for the university to only equip (1) basic knowledge , (2) basic skills and teach, (3) the way of learning for students, creating in them the ability, habits and passion for lifelong learning.
So the credits provided in regular class hours will try to equip students with parts (1) and (2) mentioned above, and "teaching how to learn , learning how to learn " to create habits, passion and the ability to learn for life is the most comprehensive criterion of teaching and learning at university.
In recent years, people often discuss pedagogical perspectives, approaches in teaching and learning, in which the " learner-centered " approach is the most prominent, because it shows the ultimate goal, the nature of the teaching and learning process. When it comes to the learner-centered perspective, the most important principle is to promote the initiative of the learner. The teacher is then in a hidden position, influencing by helping the learner choose to collect and process information.
Photoshop is a specialized graphics software used to edit images, used in web design, support drawing, photo editing for publications, photo restoration . Photoshop is not part of the university training program because it is not basic knowledge or basic skills, it is a specialized tool and in reality there are many such tools. But it is a very suitable subject for learners to try, because it is attractive, helps to express creativity, increases confidence, great for self-study in a "hands-on" way.
Photoshop is commonly used in activities such as:
– Website design
– Design in fashion
– Design in the field of art photography
– Draw all kinds of pictures (matte painting and many other genres),
– Draw textures for 3D programs…
Self-study Photoshop via the Internet ” is a voluntary activity by the student community of the Faculty of Information Technology, Dai Nam University, and is practiced based on internet resources. On the one hand, it increases students’ initiative in learning and on the other hand, it shows a way of learning through the internet environment that is developing strongly.
Imbued with the viewpoint of “taking the learner as the center”, the Faculty of Information Technology of Dai Nam University has increased many practical subjects, and at the same time applied many forms of encouraging learners to self-study and self-practice through videos and detailed instructions, giving learners the ability to read, listen, understand and follow, thereby knowing how to be interested, passionate and know how to self-study with the guidance of the teacher. “ Self-study Photoshop via the Internet ” is an effort to enhance students’ initiative, encourage creativity and also foster a professional skill for students in their future career.
