Tourism human resources are in short supply and need to be retrained?

According to the General Department of Tourism, Vietnam needs about 40,000 new workers in the tourism sector each year, while the number of graduates in this field is only 15,000 students/year. The tourism industry currently has about 650,000 direct jobs and 2 million indirect jobs, and the number of management workers is expected to increase by 25% each year. However, the trained and qualified tourism workforce is still low, so businesses have to spend time retraining.

Ms. Cao Thi Hoa (Vice Principal) and Dr. Le Thi Thanh Huong (Vice Principal) visited and encouraged Tourism students who are interning at Rosamia Hotel - Da Nang.
One of the reasons why tourism graduates want to work but businesses have to retrain them is that they do not have working skills because the training program is too heavy on theory, not focusing on training skills and experience for learners. Meanwhile, tourism businesses require workers to have knowledge, skills, good attitudes and experience. And this can only be achieved through practice and direct experience in the business environment. In addition, the principle of promotion in the tourism industry is popular "from the bottom", all levels of management must start from the staff level.

Practice and experience are the factors that make the success of students of the Faculty of Tourism.

To meet the demands of the market as well as overcome the “disadvantages” in the current training of the tourism industry, Dr. Le Dac Son - Chairman of the Board of Directors - Dai Nam University expressed his opinion: “ Practice is an important factor in training the tourism industry. To be ahead of the curve, not dependent on other businesses, there is no better solution than for the school to open its own business to both do business and create an environment for students to practice and experience…”.

According to Dr. Le Dac Son, sending 1-2 students is enough for a business, but sending hundreds of students is not something any business is willing to train and ensure good practical results for the students.

Practical experience is a huge advantage that helps students pass rigorous recruitment exams and not be surprised when starting work. This is considered the best lesson for students to learn from experience because in the process of working, it is inevitable that there will be "collisions" and students will have more experience to handle situations. These experiences will help students score points with employers ", shared Mr. Tran Sy Nguyen - Head of the Faculty of Tourism, Dai Nam University.

Training skilled human resources is essential to develop the tourism industry.

In July 2018, Dai Nam University officially opened a 3-star hotel in Hanoi. In early 2019, Dai Nam University officially received, managed and operated the 5-star Rosamia hotel at 282 Vo Nguyen Giap - Ngu Hanh Son - Da Nang City. With a direct training model from businesses, Dai Nam Tourism students practice their profession and perfect their professional skills at 3-star and 5-star hotels that meet international standards right from the first year with a total practice time of up to 50% of the study time.

Thu An, a student of the Faculty of Tourism at Dai Nam University who is interning at Rosamia, said: “ We regularly come into contact with many types of customers, of many ages, not only domestic customers but also a large number of international customers. During our internship here, our communication skills, behavior and foreign language proficiency are improved every day.”

After nearly 3 months of internship, Tourism students - Dai Nam University confidently completed the assigned hotel work.

Sharing about the practical tasks when practicing at the hotel, Thu An said that at first, interns will be trained by hotel staff about room service, reception service, and restaurant service because the reality is always different from the theory in class . "Currently, we can confidently work and meet the requirements of the job even though we have not graduated from university..." Thu An confidently said.

As for Ngoc Anh - a student of QTDL 12-03, she shared: " If we only learn theory without practice, it will be very disadvantageous for students because the tourism industry requires very high professional expertise. Although knowledge in the classroom helps improve qualifications, if we do not have "real-life experience", we will not be able to fill the gaps in skills ". From a first-year student without much specialized knowledge, after a period of "testing by fire", Ngoc Anh was able to confidently practice and do well in hotel professional skills.

Following the success of the first batch, 32 first-year students of the Faculty of Tourism of Dai Nam University continued to do the second internship at Rosamia- Da Nang.

Evaluating the capacity of Dai Nam University Tourism students, Mr. Duong Van Que - Executive Director of Rosamia Danang Hotel said: " Up to now, after nearly 3 months of internship at Rosamia Danang Hotel; Dai Nam University Tourism students have good professional knowledge, have the acumen to skillfully handle possible situations to become a solid hotel employee..."

With a strong commitment from the Board of Directors and the Faculty of Tourism to invest in and pioneer in early enterprise training for students, Dai Nam University is confident that it will create a good source of human resources with "solid skills and good professional skills" leading in the smokeless industry, meeting all strict requirements of employers.
