“Garbage will only be garbage if it is mixed together. Garbage will become a resource if it is classified properly. Eliminating the habit of littering and classifying garbage properly helps to improve recycling efficiency and protect the living environment…”

That is the sharing of Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal, Head of Movement Department - Dai Nam University around the story of 3R standard waste classification, environmental protection, and combating global climate change.

Indiscriminate dumping of waste causes environmental pollution and poor waste recycling efficiency.

According to Ms. Cao Thi Hoa, the habit of littering; thinking that trash cans are for throwing trash, and that trash is just thrown in the bin is one of the reasons why environmental pollution is getting worse and the efficiency of recycling and reusing waste is low.
According to data from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City each year discharge more than 30,000 tons of waste, including household waste, industrial waste and medical waste, of which 50 - 70% of the waste contains compounds that can be recycled and create new energy sources, but only about 10% of this is recycled and reused.

“Each type of waste has its own characteristics and different effects on the environment. Proper classification will turn waste into a priceless resource and contribute to filtering and protecting the environment …”, Ms. Cao Thi Hoa emphasized.

Faced with the current situation of littering without classification, the 3R waste classification model has been piloted and applied in Vietnam since 2007. However, the implementation of the 3R waste classification model in Vietnam, including Hanoi, has not been really effective, because the habit of littering of many people has become very difficult to give up.

Proper waste classification helps increase waste recycling efficiency and protect the environment.

In order to propagate, educate, and raise awareness of waste classification according to the 3R model, and join hands to protect the living environment, Dai Nam University has concretized it through activities to welcome Youth Month with the theme "Youth with green living".

Activities during Youth Month of Dai Nam University aim to educate and raise awareness of environmental protection among staff, lecturers and students through practical experience activities such as: 3R trash cans, periodic garbage collection and classification every Saturday morning at Van Quan Lake and Than Tho Lake (Van Quan - Ha Dong), camping competition with environmental themes, green dance competition to convey the message of environmental protection...

This year, in addition to waste collection and environmental sanitation activities around Van Quan Lake and Than Tho Lake; environmental-themed camping; and group dance competitions to convey environmental protection messages, Dai Nam teachers and students will make efforts to promote and further promote community awareness in waste classification and treatment according to 3R standards,” said Ms. Cao Thi Hoa.

The habit of “clean house, dirty alley” has become a part of people’s lifestyle. Waste collection and classification has naturally become the sole responsibility of environmental sanitation workers, making solid waste collection, recycling and treatment activities still unable to meet actual needs, leading to serious environmental pollution, causing consequences to community life and socio-economic development.

In that context, the integrated solid waste management solution based on the 3R principle will be the direction that Dai Nam University is aiming for in the joint fight against global climate change.

Instead of using plastic bags, use paper bags to protect the environment.

“Awareness cannot be formed in a day or two. If we want students and people in the area to be aware of waste classification, we must set an example and be exemplary in implementing it to form daily living habits for our own families. Only then can we hope that the community and people will be aware of following suit,” Ms. Cao Thi Hoa emphasized.

3R is an abbreviation of the first 3 letters in English: Reduce - Reuse - Recycle. The benefits of the 3R model include: Raising awareness of people and businesses about waste and waste treatment; preventing environmental degradation, reducing air and groundwater pollution; saving natural resources, raw material exploitation costs; saving waste collection and treatment costs, reducing daily waste; reducing land for landfills...
