Practice speaking English using the Shadowing method

Shadowing is a very effective speaking technique for practicing intonation, rhythm and pronunciation like a native speaker. However, not everyone knows about the Shadowing method. So what is the shadowing method and how to apply it effectively? Let's find out through the article below!
What is the Shadowing method of learning English?
The word “shadow” literally translates to “shadow”. The idea of shadowing is quite simple: You listen to someone speak and repeat what they say, with as little hesitation as possible. You imitate what someone says and just focus on the sound of the language. With shadowing, you can practice anywhere, anytime. All you need is a phone, headphones and a source of listening to practice.
“Shadowing” is a technique of imitating the sounds, stress, and intonation of native speakers right after hearing them pronounce. This method helps you improve your pronunciation skills and at the same time form better reflexes when speaking, so you will pronounce more fluently and naturally.
Shadowing Practice Steps
Step 1 - Select listening source
Choose a listening passage no longer than 5 minutes, with only one speaker. It is best to choose a source spoken by a native speaker.
Step 2 - Listen
Before you imitate the speaker, listen to it at least once to get used to the speaker's voice, tempo and intonation. Don't worry if you don't understand every word, but if the listening is too fast and complicated, find another source.
Step 3 - Practice Shadowing
It may be difficult at first, but try to repeat as quickly and accurately as possible. Start with the first 20-30 seconds, if you can't do it, stop and start again. Don't worry about the meaning, just imitate the sound.
Step 4 - Record your voice
Once you have practiced and become confident, try recording yourself speaking.
Step 5 - Listen again
Listen to your recording and compare it to the original source. Learn from your mistakes and practice to improve.

When looking for listening exercises, you should choose the ones that are pronounced as accurately and clearly as possible. To avoid pressure and boredom, you should only practice for a short time. However, you should practice regularly every day to form a habit. You can also combine with other activities such as on the way to school, while jogging, taking a shower...
At the English Language Department of Dai Nam University, this method is also applied to help students improve their speaking and pronunciation skills right from the first year. Students will practice Shadowing skills in the Practical Phonetics course with contents on the 44-sound system, word stress, sentence stress, linking sounds, intonation, etc.
To get the most out of the technique, pay close attention to the syllables in the song and remember to set aside time to practice Shadowing regularly every day!
