Favored by nature with a long and beautiful coastline, Vietnam's marine tourism industry has a lot of potential and opportunities for development. However, the problem of marine pollution due to the habit of littering has been and is a major barrier preventing the tourism industry from fully exploiting its inherent potential. With the message "clean sea - green tourism", at the Youth Camp with Green Living, teachers and students of the Faculty of Tourism - Dai Nam University called on the community to join hands to clean the sea.

Alarming amount of plastic waste in the ocean
Alarming amount of plastic waste in the ocean

Plastic waste is "attacking" the ocean, causing serious marine pollution.
In a 2018 report, the British government said that if we do not take strong and drastic actions, the amount of plastic in the oceans will triple within the next decade. Recent statistics also show that 5 Asian countries including China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam contribute up to 60% of the total amount of plastic waste in the ocean. And most recently, the image of a dead whale drifting on the shore of the Philippines containing 155 plastic cups, 25 plastic bags, 4 pairs of foam sandals, more than 1,000 other pieces of plastic in its stomach... shocked everyone.
Plastic waste is attacking the ocean, turning it into a giant garbage dump; disrupting the marine ecosystem balance; causing extinction of many marine species; threatening the tourism industry; negatively affecting human health and quality of life... So what is the cause?
According to environmental experts, the habit of littering; mixing different types of waste together; thinking that throwing trash in the bin is enough; dumping toxic substances into the sea... are the main causes of marine pollution becoming increasingly serious as it is today.

In fact, the sea can still exist without humans, but without the sea, humans can hardly exist. So, why are we “tying up” our own lives?

In fact, the sea can still exist without humans, but without the sea, humans can hardly exist. So, why are we “tying up” our own lives?

Students of the Faculty of Tourism - Dai Nam University prepared for the Camp with their own hands, spreading the message "let's clean the ocean".
Sharing with us, Mr. Tran Sy Nguyen - Head of Tourism Department emphasized: "If the sea is not clean, tourism cannot be green. Marine pollution is hindering the development of tourism; negatively affecting the marine ecosystem; harming the lives, health and future of people... If we do not act promptly, the consequences will be unpredictable."

The message of reducing plastic use in life and properly classifying waste from the Faculty of Tourism is presented vividly and attractively.
According to Mr. Tran Sy Nguyen, marine pollution has caused tourism revenue to decline seriously in recent years when the potential cannot be exploited and domestic and foreign tourists cannot be retained.
Faced with that situation, on March 21, at the Green Living Youth Camp of Dai Nam University, the Faculty of Tourism chose the theme "clean sea - green tourism" with the call "let's clean the sea" as the theme for its booth.
With hot topics directly related to the field of study, teachers and students of the Faculty of Tourism have been very meticulous in coming up with ideas and implementing the messages they want to convey. All are handmade, meticulously, skillfully and using materials that are friendly to the living environment.

“ The sea doesn't need people, but people need the sea!” – one of the messages that the Faculty of Tourism wants to convey in the School's traditional camping program.
Sharing with us, Vu Thi Anh - a student of the Faculty of Tourism said: " With recycled materials and colors, we want to recycle and reduce waste, especially plastic waste in life. We do not print canvas because we know it will have a significant impact on the environment..."
With elaborate and creative preparation, the booth of the Faculty of Tourism really attracted and left a strong impression from the image of a dead whale on the coast of the Philippines to 9 ways to reduce the use of plastic in life, how to classify garbage in the family, the message " the sea doesn't need people, but people need the sea!"...

The image of a dead whale on the beach, with a lot of plastic in its stomach, was vividly portrayed by teachers and students of the Faculty of Tourism in this year's camp program.
“A friend in my class is fighting cancer. We organized the camp as a spiritual gift to our friend. At the same time, through this event, we want to call on everyone to join hands to protect the living environment from the smallest things for the health of ourselves and those around us…”, Anh confided.

With meaningful and highly topical messages, the booth of the Faculty of Tourism received high appreciation from the Jury and had a strong impact on people's awareness and actions.
How to reduce and reuse waste in life: Used paper on one side can be reused for many purposes, such as: scrap paper, sticky notes, drawing, folding, storing things...; Plastic items can be used as containers, decorations, planting trees, making handmade items...; Milk cartons include the box and straw, the box can be recycled to make a roof like a corrugated iron roof that is very good at preventing heat, the straw can be made into handmade models; We should donate unused clothes if they can still be used, the rest can be made into cute and convenient household items, sewn into cloth bags... In particular, disposable plastic bags should be washed for reuse. In case they can no longer be used, they should be washed, dried and made into EcoBrick. |
