Letter from General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong on the occasion of Voluntary Blood Donation Day, April 7, 2020

2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the Prime Minister's Decision to designate April 7 as "National Voluntary Blood Donation Day" (April 7, 2000 - April 7, 2020). On this occasion, General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong sent a letter to compatriots, comrades and soldiers nationwide.

Dear compatriots, comrades and soldiers nationwide,

On the occasion of "National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, April 7, 2020", I warmly commend, acknowledge and highly appreciate the noble gesture full of compassion and profound humanity of voluntary blood donors; organizations and individuals who have actively contributed to voluntary blood donation, which demonstrates the responsibility and affection of each person towards the community and society.

I know that in recent years, the voluntary blood donation movement has developed widely throughout the country with many rich, specific, practical activities and achieved encouraging results, helping patients have timely blood for treatment. However, there are still many places and times in hospitals where patients have to wait for blood or do not have enough blood and blood products for transfusion. This is a great disadvantage for patients in need of blood and reduces the effectiveness of treatment.

Blood is a special medicine, safe blood can only be donated by healthy people who volunteer and donate blood regularly.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, I would like to request Party committees at all levels, authorities, ministries, branches, organizations and the whole society to continue to pay attention to and create favorable conditions to promote the voluntary blood donation movement to develop further. For the health of the community and for your own health, I call on compatriots, comrades and soldiers nationwide, each healthy and qualified person to always be ready and enthusiastic to participate in blood donation and actively encourage everyone to donate blood regularly to save lives, to help each person check their health, save the sick, for a healthy and humane society, contributing to the cause of protecting, caring for and improving people's health, and the sustainable development of the country.
