Choosing the wrong major and school will cost you not only in the present but also in the long term, even your whole life… However, realizing the incompatibility, daring to change direction and start over to pursue a major that suits your strengths and passion is never too late.

Phung Ngoc Vinh is the "oldest" male student in the Faculty of Medicine, Dai Nam University. Before joining DNU, the young man born in 1994 had spent 4 years at Hanoi Law University and 3 years studying Medical Laboratory Technology at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, VNU. Currently, Vinh has a bachelor's degree in law and can completely "live well" with his major. However, at the age of 26, the young man from Bac Giang still chose to start over to pursue the major he has been passionate about since childhood.

“I studied Law because of an “accident”. After that “accident”, studying Law only reached the level of interest. Medicine was my passion and dream since childhood. However, I still silently thank that “accident” because it gave me the opportunity to become a medical student like today…” Vinh shared.

Sharing the reason for dropping out of the Medical Laboratory Technology major at VNU, Vinh said: “Medical Laboratory Technology is just a narrow major. I myself want to study more in depth to become a good general practitioner. I have loved studying medicine since I was a child, so I spent a lot of time learning about medical training institutions, the training programs of the schools, the teaching methods of teachers and the learning methods. After researching and consulting with leading professors, I chose the Faculty of Medicine at Dai Nam University to fulfill my dream. For me, the most important thing is to live and pursue my passion to the end, sooner or later is not too important…”

Vuong Thi Hai Hau - a former student of Vinh University's Gifted School, was an excellent student for 12 years. After graduating from high school, Hau chose to apply and study at Hanoi Pedagogical University. For the 10X generation, teaching is a very noble and sacred profession. She and her family are very proud to be admitted to the top pedagogical school in the country. However, after a period of studying, Hau realized that she was not suitable for the teaching profession. " Studying a major that is not your forte or passion is really stressful and tiring," Hai Hau shared.

Not wanting to waste time and effort, Hai Hau decided to change to pursue her favorite major – Finance and Banking. In the 2020 enrollment period, the female student born in 2001 chose to apply for admission to the Finance and Banking Faculty of Dai Nam University with a score of 26.8.

“I have never regretted my decision to pursue my passion to the end. The environment at Dai Nam is very dynamic, the new way of learning has helped me integrate more easily,” Hai Hau confided.

Nguyen Thao Van - a girl born in 2001 from Hung Yen is one of the typical examples of choosing a major based on trends and crowd psychology.

After graduating from high school, Thao Van decided to continue her studies by applying for admission to the Tourism and Travel Services Management major at a college in Hanoi. “I chose to study Tourism because I saw many friends applying and this is also one of the hottest majors in the 4.0 technology era.”

Choosing a major based on emotion and not researching thoroughly made Thao Van quickly encounter many difficulties in her studies. “I couldn’t find the interest and motivation to study. I really felt stuck and disoriented…”

After a year of uncertainty and deadlock, Nguyen Thao Van decided to switch to studying Chinese Language and Culture at Dai Nam University.

At the most uncertain time, Thao Van confided in a close friend and had the opportunity to study and experience with K13 students of the Chinese Language and Culture Department of Dai Nam University. Immediately, Thao Van was drawn to Chinese unconsciously and passionately and decided to apply for admission to the Chinese Language and Culture Department of Dai Nam University in the 2020 admissions period.

After more than 2 months of studying and experiencing at the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, Dai Nam University, Thao Van seemed to have transformed into a different person. The young girl studied with interest and passion. “After all, I realized that studying in the right field and major that you love is the most important thing. We cannot study well in a field of study, do well in a job that we do not love. It is never too late to start over. The important thing is whether you seriously consider it to realize the incompatibility and dare to bravely change to start and change yourself…” Thao Van shared.

According to the latest survey results of the Vietnam Center for Human Resource Demand Forecasting, the rate of students choosing the wrong major is about 60%, only 5% of students have knowledge about the major they have chosen, 20% have relatively complete knowledge, especially 75% of students lack knowledge about the major and profession they have chosen. As a result, 200,000 university and college graduates cannot find jobs; 60% of graduates have to work in the wrong field, not in line with their strengths and abilities...

According to education experts, at the time of deciding to choose a major, choose a school, but choose the wrong career according to your parents' wishes, leave it to luck, do not care about your passion, ability, job requirements..., you may have to pay the price not for the present but for the next 15 years, even your whole life...

My advice to you is to choose a major and a school that matches your abilities, strengths, and passions.
