- Hai Anh asked: I want to learn about Public Relations but I don't understand what jobs students do after graduation and where. If I want to study PR, which school can I apply to?
Reply:
In recent years, PR has become a familiar concept when most businesses, agencies and organizations need a team of specialists to connect with customers.
In our country, the Academy of Journalism and Communication and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) are two schools with a long history of training in Public Relations with quite high admission scores.
The Academy of Journalism and Communication took 29 and 29.5 points for different blocks (English multiplied by coefficient 2) in 2015 and 30 and 30.5 points in 2016. Meanwhile, the standard scores for this major in 2015 and 2016 of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities were 97 and 89 respectively (tested in the form of competency assessment).
In addition, candidates who want to study PR can also apply to Dai Nam University. Last year, the admission score for the major was 15.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance also started training Public Relations in 2016 with a benchmark score of 16.

Regarding career prospects, at a career orientation seminar for students organized by Dai Nam University (Hanoi), Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thanh - Strategic PR Director of LeBros Media Company - said that businesses are lacking a large number of PR workers.
In the past, many people thought that public relations was only necessary for businesses. In fact, cultural and social activities or ministries, departments and branches all need professional communication staff.
In addition, after graduation, Public Relations students can also work at newspaper offices, radio and television stations and related agencies and units specializing in PR and communications.
With such a large labor market, students have many options to pursue a working environment, as well as a field of interest that suits their abilities. Mr. Thanh believes that students in this field have many job opportunities.
According to Ms. Le Thi Nha, Head of the Faculty of Public Relations and Communications, Dai Nam University, in 2017, 100% of alumni of courses 5 and 6 of the faculty had jobs. Most of them worked in their majors.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thanh added that the market lacking media workers does not guarantee that all students will find jobs if they do not meet the requirements of employers.
He assessed that many people still lack writing skills, social media interaction, foreign language skills and presentation skills.
According to him, when choosing to pursue a career in PR, students need to be aware of constantly learning to equip themselves with necessary knowledge and skills, and at the same time have a serious attitude towards work.
"In addition, they must enjoy communicating with others even if they are not very talkative," he added.
This industry also requires workers to have rich social knowledge, be able to observe, judge, handle situations quickly, have knowledge of foreign languages, information technology, be dynamic and creative.
Therefore, if you are a sociable and eager to learn person, you can base on last year's benchmark scores, enrollment targets of the above schools, and at the same time find out more information to make the right choice.
