Invest For Homeless – Project of giving heart, receiving knowledge with Wall Street DNU Club

As the name suggests, the project is not only the passion for learning about finance of young people from the Faculty of Finance and Banking of DNU but also their precious heart to bring to the less fortunate lives out there with their own knowledge and courage.

Dai Nam University Wall Street Club is a prestigious finance-loving student community in Hanoi.

I called Pham Thanh Phong - President of Wall Street Club late at night, he was still very enthusiastic in sharing with me stories about the club's activities with an easily recognizable passion. Phong said that DWS was built to become the "key" academic club of the Faculty of Finance and Banking of Dai Nam University.

Pham Thanh Phong (Chairman of the Wall Street Club) aspires to expand the Invest for Homeless project to support disadvantaged groups in society to improve their lives.

Phong shared: “Our club maintains two main activities - training and investment. Wall Street's motto is to equip club members and later on, young people in the faculty with a deeper understanding of banking, especially investing in the stock market. And learning goes hand in hand with practice, we also organize activities so that members have the opportunity to invest in real life.

Regarding knowledge, our club organizes training sharing sessions once a week. During the training sessions, I and the core members will share knowledge from basic to complex about securities with the members. In addition, I also assign you to learn about a stock code (MCK) for a week, at the end of the week you will send the summary file about that MCK to the common folder so that everyone can contribute, evaluate and share knowledge with each other."

Phong added that in addition to training activities, members of the club also experience real investment by investing their own capital to realize losses and profits. And through these experiences, they can not only understand more deeply the knowledge they have been trained in, update market information, but also practice the psychology of stock investment. Therefore, they can draw many valuable lessons about investing for themselves.

Wall Street is a club that organizes practical investment activities. But instead of investing to earn interest for each member or raising funds for the club, Wall Street invests for a much more meaningful goal: All profits from stock investments will be used by the club to help the homeless or those in difficult circumstances, so that they can have a slightly warmer Tet in the cold winter weather.

By both training in financial investment knowledge and organizing social activities, the club will help many people: poor patients, students in difficult circumstances...

This project of the club is called Invest for Homeless with capital formed from the members' own pockets. The club has 27 members, each person spends from 100-500k for this project. In addition, the club also mobilizes capital from lecturers in the faculty, from which the initial investment capital of the project has been raised to 10 million VND.

During the project implementation period, you have focused on holding some MCKs in essential industries such as electricity, oil and gas, etc., and some banking codes. And up to now, the project has also achieved certain encouraging results in both quality and quantity. After 2 months of meticulous research and methodical investment, the project has earned a profit of 500,000 VND. This may be a low profit for many people, but it is the heart and effort of all members of the Club. And obviously we must agree that the return on equity (ROE) of 5% for new investors is absolutely not a bad number.

Above all, during the project implementation, the club members have gained more useful knowledge. Phong said that the members have asked more in-depth questions, and their summaries have also become more complete… This is a small but very happy result for the club.
