INTERNSHIP IN MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM - SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T?

Internships can strengthen a master’s degree. Some graduate programs now require internships to be arranged and completed in a manner that is relevant to their own work and experience. According to UChicagoGRAD, internships during a master’s degree will help students gain more experience and broader connections.

Internship is counted as credit

If possible, your program should arrange for an internship to be considered for credit in your master’s program. Students should discuss their options with their academic advisor. Academic advisors often have contacts that students can use or will know of internships that have worked well for previous students and can advise future students. Your advisor can also discuss the best time to undertake an internship and how to fit it into your study plan.

Summer Internship

Summer internships are one way to get an internship. Many companies hire interns during the summer, because it is the easiest time to find people. For students, participating in a summer internship does not interfere with their academic program. This is a good option for students who are worried about graduating on time or who want to complete their internship in a different location.

Compulsory internship

If an internship is required for your master's program, your schedule should be planned with this in mind. Internships will also count toward your overall degree. Some programs even give you the option of completing an internship instead of writing your thesis.

Not allowed

Some short-term or intensive master's programmes do not include an internship or other concurrent programme. This is often the case when the course load is heavy and the student must also complete a practicum or supervised placement. However, if one really wants to do an internship, it is still possible to try it beforehand.
