The huge demand for human resources in the Semiconductor Technology industry is one of the reasons why this major is being “hunted” in the 2024 university admission season. It is forecasted that in the next 5 years, Vietnam will need about 20,000 people with university degrees or higher for the Semiconductor Technology industry. Pursuing this major, students can be completely assured of “having a job right after graduation”.

Huge human resource demand in Semiconductor Technology industry

The world is "thirsty" for human resources in the semiconductor industry.

The US semiconductor industry is expected to face a shortage of 70,000 - 90,000 workers in the coming years.

The Japan Semiconductor Industry Association predicts that the industry will face a shortage of about 1,000 skilled workers each year over the next decade. Meanwhile, the race to build semiconductor factories in Japan requires more skilled workers.

To address the labor shortage, the Korean Ministry of Education has launched a “10-year roadmap” for educational institutions to train 150,000 semiconductor graduates. Some universities have been designated as “semiconductor universities.” Each region has its own semiconductor research center and is set up within a national network.

The demand for human resources in the semiconductor industry in Vietnam is huge.

Vietnam’s semiconductor industry is growing strongly, attracting many large investment projects from multinational corporations. However, besides its development potential, the industry is also facing major challenges in human resources.

According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, the human resource demand for Vietnam's semiconductor industry is 5,000 - 10,000 engineers/year, but the capacity to meet is less than 20%. Data from the National Science and Technology Portal shows that Vietnam currently has only 5,575 chip design engineers.

According to economic experts' forecasts, the demand for human resources in the semiconductor chip industry in the next 5 years is about 20,000 people and in the next 10 years about 50,000 people, with university degrees or higher.

Many job options

With the huge demand for human resources in the Semiconductor Technology industry, students can be assured of “having a job right after graduation”. Semiconductor Technology engineers can work in many different positions such as:

  • Electronic design engineer, manufacturing engineer, test and quality engineer, analysis and simulation engineer, semiconductor application engineer...
  • Semiconductor materials expert
  • Process engineer oversees the packaging process of manufacturing in the semiconductor industry.
  • Quality control technician: performs testing and quality assessment of products in the semiconductor industry such as testing samples, standardizing testing procedures, and ensuring that products meet quality requirements.
  • Maintenance technician: responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing machinery, equipment and electronic systems in the semiconductor industry
  • Researcher at agencies, organizations and enterprises in the field of semiconductor technology.

Income up to 1.5 billion VND/year

In the current and future context, semiconductor industry is a promising industry, helping to produce talented engineers, contributing to the development of the country's semiconductor industry. Enterprises specializing in the production of microchips are in need of recruitment, creating great career opportunities and attractive income for young workers. Therefore, the salary of engineers in this industry also tends to increase over time, depending on job position, experience and professional qualifications.

The salary of microchip and semiconductor engineers has been increasing steadily every year. According to a survey, new graduates have an average after-tax salary of 215 - 500 million VND/year. Engineers with more than 7 years of experience often earn twice as much and have recorded a salary of over 1.5 billion VND/year for engineers with more than 15 years of experience. It can be said that this is a very attractive income for human resources in this industry.

According to statistics, Vietnam currently has about 50 microchip design companies, mainly concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City. On average, a newly established company needs to recruit 50 - 100 engineers in the first year. It can be seen that job opportunities in the microchip - semiconductor industry will continue to develop in the future. If you have chosen to pursue this career, you can rest assured and be optimistic about your decision.
