Portfolio – a learning method to help improve vocabulary for students

Based on the actual teaching process, Ms. Phung Thi Yen - lecturer of the Faculty of Foreign Languages chose " Using Portfolio to improve students' vocabulary at Dai Nam University" as the research topic. Sharing about her research topic, Ms. Phung Thi Yen said: " Portfolio is not a new concept in foreign language classes at many universities. However, through the actual teaching, I realized that the use of Portfolio is still limited, students cannot observe their own learning progress, nor can they adjust themselves to bring about higher learning efficiency ".

According to Ms. Phung Thi Yen, Dai Nam University gives priority to foreign language training, specifically English for students with a total of 27 credits over 7 regular semesters at the school. However, most students still find learning English very difficult, of which vocabulary is a major obstacle. “Using an effective vocabulary learning method is an essential desire of all foreign language learners…”, Ms. Phung Thi Yen said.
MSc. Phung Thi Yen presented her research work to the Scientific Council.
Through research, the author of the topic affirms that the benefits of building student profiles in learning, not only change the results of a subject content but also help change learning thinking and active learning methods, especially forming self-awareness in learning - one of the virtues that determines the level of success or failure of students in the university education environment.
According to the survey results, more than 70% of the respondents said they remembered more words, more words, and read them more correctly. The number of learners who showed improvement in remembering how to write more words also accounted for 60% and a positive sign, 17% of students knew how to use vocabulary in context after using the portfolio.

The success of the study was also demonstrated in helping the research subjects to love a new method that they had never known before. Furthermore, up to 70% of the learners said that they could see their own progress in learning by comparing the changes through the lessons shown in the portfolio. In addition, 82.7% of the research subjects said that they wanted to use the Portfolio for other subjects.

Dr. Dang Ngoc Huong highly appreciated the applicability of the two research topics in improving the learning efficiency of Dai Nam University students.

Based on the success and effectiveness of the application of the topic, the Science Council of the Faculty of Foreign Languages has proposed applying the portfolio to many other subjects of students and the lecturers themselves can also make their own portfolios to be able to self-evaluate their teaching and make timely and reasonable adjustments to bring better efficiency and benefits to the teaching and learning of teachers and students.
Language games - sparking and sustaining the passion for learning English

With the topic " Using language games to create interest in learning English for first-year students of Dai Nam University", the author group, MSc. Nguyen Thi Nhien and MSc. Do Hong Yen, successfully reported the topic and was highly appreciated by the Acceptance Council.

The author group, MSc. Nguyen Thi Nhien and MSc. Do Hong Yen, reported their research topic to the Scientific Council.

In fact, in teaching and learning foreign languages, students will learn more effectively if they are taught in a fun, relaxing atmosphere and have many opportunities to communicate in real-world contexts. Using language games in foreign language teaching is one of the effective methods that can increase students' motivation to learn - one of the factors that determine their success in learning foreign languages. In addition, they help teachers create contexts where the language used is useful and understandable to learners.

In the research results, 95% enjoyed playing language games in English lessons and more than 60% of the surveyed people wished to play games in all lessons, but in contrast, 100% of the surveyed people only used games occasionally, citing that they did not have time to implement games in class.

One of the difficulties that most teachers encounter when using games is the time to implement them. With the characteristics of a large class, the author has provided some games for teachers to be suitable and effective so that all students in the class have the opportunity to practice the language.

The scientific council evaluated the two research topics as excellent and should be replicated and applied in teaching and learning English at Dai Nam University.

To make the use of language games effective in teaching and learning English, teachers should consider the use of games as an indispensable part of the class, continuously organize games for students to participate in class, create a fun, relaxing, enthusiastic, and cooperative English learning atmosphere. In addition, teachers should focus on choosing games that are suitable for the students' level…” Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhien emphasized.
With the practical significance of the research topics, the Faculty of Foreign Languages believes that in the future the Faculty will have a strong change in quality, best serving the teaching and learning of lecturers and students.
