According to Dr. Duong, parents today have a very short-term view. In many cases, they want their children to study hot majors, majors that they think will help them get a job, instead of letting them choose for themselves.
According to Dr. Duong, parents today have a very short-term view. In many cases, they want their children to study hot majors, majors that they think will help them get a job, instead of letting them choose for themselves.

Dr. Le Tham Duong said that children should choose their own major.
In recent days, public opinion across the country has been heated up about choosing schools and majors for children. Hot schools are constantly in a state of collapse, while TOP schools below the desired level only have 100-200 applications for admission. According to the doctor, are HOT schools really an opportunity for candidates in terms of career and earning money in the future?

Dr. Le Tham Duong : Regarding the story of the 2015 university entrance exam, we should look at it comprehensively. The reason for the exam causing social outrage is also from many sides, from the leadership, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the parents themselves. Hot schools are not always good, and not everyone who goes to a hot school or a hot major will be rich and have a lot of money.

In our country, society has incorrect perceptions about how to choose schools and careers for children. My child has 22 points, can get into a top average school, but I will let my child study at a lower school but in the major he likes. But Vietnamese people do not like to let their children study at good schools. If my child likes Pharmacy, I will let him study at a pharmacy college even though he has high scores instead of rushing to an economics or banking school which is not the child's wish.

But society and parents do not realize the importance of choosing a major . Statistical probability has been clearly calculated that if you study in your field of expertise, you will only spend 1/3 of your life to become a star in that field. If you study in your field of expertise, you will often spend your whole life and at best become an average person in that field.

Parents can only guide their children, parents should not interfere too much in their children's choice of major.

In developed countries, what criteria do they use to choose schools and careers for their children, sir?

Dr. Le Tham Duong : In developed countries, they let their children choose the career they like. In addition, they also have a participation mechanism, usually when children are in grade 3, their parents have asked their children's opinions. But in our country, that is not the case. Almost all families in Vietnam, if their children want to give their opinions to their parents, receive the sentence " the egg wants to be smarter than the duck ".

Moreover, parents often suffer from the star effect, not seeing the advantages and disadvantages of their children's strengths. Parents always want their children to take the HOT exams so that when they graduate, they will have a lot of money. This is completely wrong and very dangerous as I said above about how to follow one's weaknesses.

Besides, I can prove that it is wrong. If you sweep the streets, you are still richer than many prestigious and good schools. Any major can make you rich if you really love it. Parents, please look at the big picture.

Me too, I chose to be a teacher. In the subsidy period, people said that the teaching profession was poor and all kinds of things, but I love teaching and I see that this profession gives me reputation and a stable economic life.

Through the recent exam, I think parents should be a little fair. Of course, all three sides are at fault, from the state management, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the parents. Let time gradually resolve the problems.

Parents guide their children in choosing schools and careers, but there are also many cases where children follow the crowd mentality of getting into good schools and hot careers. Can you tell us a few stories about parents forcing their children to choose schools?

Dr. Le Tham Duong : A lot, I received many emails from students saying that if the teacher did not tell them, they would die. Many students even fell into a difficult situation and asked me, "What should I do?"

I am haunted by the story of a student who got high scores in the exam and loved the information technology industry . His parents were in the police force so they forced him to study at all costs in the police industry. But that industry did not have enough points to get into university, so his parents forced him to study at a police college. The student did not like the police industry, his points were enough to get into university in the major he loved, but they brutally forced him to study at a police college. If he did not study at a police college, he would not be able to study anything else.

I was really helpless when that child said that if he did not follow his wishes, he would deal with it by the most negative action, which was suicide. I felt heartbroken and sorry for parents who want their children to listen to them.

Why are parents interfering so deeply? They should let their children decide what to study, don't force them to study at a secondary school if they don't like it. Parents are harming their own children.
