As soon as they learned about the difficult circumstances and the tragic illness of baby Chao Ngoc Thuy, the Board of Directors of Dai Nam University decided to donate 10 million VND for her to have surgery and continue treatment.

Dai Nam University donated 10 million VND to baby Chao Ngoc Thuy at the hospital on the morning of October 14.
Sharing with us, Ms. Cao Thi Hoa - Vice Principal of Dai Nam University said: "The university not only has the task of training and providing high-quality human resources for society but also has the responsibility of educating the young generation in a comprehensive personality. The school's movement and volunteer activities always aim to guide students to love, share and be willing to help the less fortunate in society..."
Receiving the donation from Dai Nam University, Ms. Phan Thi Chiep could not hide her emotion and gratitude because in the most difficult and desperate situation, her family received encouragement and support from the University. “My husband and I asked the hospital to let our child go home because we could not afford the surgery, the hospital fee was only 2 million VND, there was no place to borrow money…”, the young mother choked up.

It is known that due to the highland customs, Ms. Phan Thi Chiep had to get married at the age of 16. Both husband and wife were unemployed, living on a few acres of land. At the age of 21, Ms. Chiep was already the mother of two children, the older one was 4 years old, the younger one was nearly 2 years old. Their life was poor and difficult but still passed peacefully, misfortune only really struck when the couple's second daughter was diagnosed with retinal cancer.
“At first, my husband and I thought that our daughter had a normal sore eye, so we went to the pharmacy to buy some medicine and did not examine her. It was only when her eyes were swollen and almost bulging out, and she cried day and night, that we rushed to take her to Bao Thang District General Hospital for examination. There, the doctors suspected that she had retinal cancer and transferred her to a higher level. On the day we brought our daughter to Hanoi for treatment, my husband and I emptied all our money and borrowed everywhere to get 5 million VND. The initial cost of transportation, examination, and testing cost 2 million VND, the hospital fee was 2 million VND, and now we only have a few hundred thousand VND left. Our daughter cried day and night, unable to eat or drink due to the pain…” Ms. Phan Thi Chiep choked up as she recounted.
Therefore, when the doctor informed Thuy that she had to undergo surgery, the cost of the surgery was estimated at 10 million VND and that more tests were needed to diagnose whether the disease had metastasized to the brain in order to have a treatment plan, Chiep and her husband had to swallow their tears and beg the hospital to let their daughter go home without further treatment.

With the support from Dai Nam University, baby Chao Ngoc Thuy will be able to have surgery soon after the MRI results are available.
Sharing with us, Dr. Tran Tuyet Thanh Hai - who directly treated Thuy said: "Although we know that the patient's family situation is very difficult, we still try to encourage and advise the family to let the child stay for treatment because retinoblastoma has a very good prognosis if surgery is performed promptly. If treated well, the chance of the child living more than 5 years is quite high..."
With the support of Dai Nam University, baby Chao Ngoc Thuy can have surgery soon after the MRI scan results. However, the post-surgery treatment will also be very expensive. The school hopes that more benefactors will share and help the family so that the baby can continue to receive treatment in the future.
