You are standing at an important threshold of life. Choosing which door to enter the future is one of the most important things.

(FOR FINAL YEAR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS)

Dear 12th grade students!
You are standing at an important threshold of life. Choosing which door to enter the future is one of the most important things. With many years of contact with many classes of young people, I understand that many of them have been hesitantly standing at the university gate, have searched and consulted through many different channels, but they still do not have a full picture of the career they will do in the future. On the other hand, the most important problem here is that there is no experienced person to help with career guidance in the right way. As a result, opening the wrong door to the future will cause you to immediately encounter deadlocks from the very first steps. Some students encounter difficulties right in the learning process due to lack of capacity and passion, some students, even though they have a bachelor's degree in hand, have to sadly say goodbye to the knowledge they have studied for 4, 5 years to do a different job or profession.
The reality is that many graduates have to do jobs that are not related to their major after graduation. According to recent statistics from the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Hanoi, about 30% of graduates have jobs that are related to or similar to their major, 30% want to find another job, 40% have not found a job, and in the second quarter of 2017, up to 183,000 graduates were unemployed.
Faced with the reality that many university graduates, even those with good or excellent grades, have difficulty finding jobs, many 12th graders, although not yet reaching the university door, have been encouraged by their families to find jobs when they graduate (output). Many families are even willing to spend a lot of money to get their children jobs in state agencies with the desire for stability and completely disregard for actual income. This leads to a situation where students choose a career based on their parents' relationships, making their studies reluctant, lacking passion, and even unrelated to their own abilities, leading to frustration and obviously poor academic results, leading to poor career abilities, with no possibility of future development.
The question is why this situation continues. One of the main reasons that needs to be mentioned here is that the issue of career guidance for students has not really been focused on. In most high schools today, 12th grade students are always given all the conditions to graduate by the school, but not all schools pay due attention to career guidance for them. Most universities only care about enrollment and forget the responsibility of career guidance for students before attracting students to the professions that the school trains. Dai Nam University is one of the few schools that considers career guidance for students as a social responsibility that the school undertakes. In just a few months, students will graduate from high school and prepare to register for colleges and universities. This will certainly be a really fierce competition. However, "competing" against opponents who have the same dream of entering university does not necessarily guarantee a stable job and position in the future.
To prepare you for the future, where colleges and universities are waiting for you, she has some advice for future students as follows:
- First of all, you need to determine the importance of choosing a major and a career. This is extremely important! If you choose wrongly, it will be a huge waste for yourself, your family and society. If this choice comes from your interests and aspirations, it will usually be more sustainable. Choosing an unsuitable major has a huge impact (in a negative way) on the future studies and work of candidates (I will have an article on choosing a career based on your own characteristics). Many students have been misguided from this first step, they only try to get into the school they like, and what career they study is not important, this is extremely dangerous and leads to quick failure in the future. Note: CHOOSE A CAREER, NOT A SCHOOL.
- After you have chosen a suitable career, the next step is to find out which schools offer those majors? What is the employment rate for students in those majors? What is the social demand for that job? To find out about these issues, you can go through the mainstream media, visit the schools' websites, listen to direct introductions from the schools during recruitment fairs, and if possible, consult with students who are studying that major. And an equally important thing is to measure your strength to choose the most suitable environment, so that in that environment you have the opportunity to maximize your potential in the field you choose.
To avoid regrettable rashness before making a decision, you can refer to the following steps:
Step 1: Be really interested in your career direction.
To do this, you need to do the following specific tasks:
- Record your discoveries about yourself and the careers you are considering.
- Identify what your true interests are. What subject do you like best in class? What makes you happiest? These are basic steps to help you understand your own interests better and help you identify the relationship between your interests and certain career groups.
- Next is to find out your own strengths. To do this, you should make a list of your strengths and best subjects. This will play an important role in shaping your suitable career.
- What are your life principles? This is the step to determine which career will satisfy your life principles. Are you independent or dependent on the majority? Settling down or wandering around? You should set these principles specifically and consider them for each career.
This step will be presented in more detail in the next article "Choosing a career that suits your personal characteristics"
Step 2. Assess the social demand for the career you intend to choose in combination with your own abilities.
To do this step you need:
- Learn the pros and cons of each profession. The possibilities and opportunities in each profession, the working environment, the required qualifications and salary. All are necessary for the choice.
- Compare between occupations to see which one is most suitable for you, which one you can choose to satisfy your principles, interests and abilities. (You can refer to this part in the next article "Choosing a career that suits your characteristics")
Step 3. Find a school that offers the vocational training that best suits you.
To do this step well, you need to do the following specific tasks:
- First of all, answer the questions: Do you want to go to university or college? Or study abroad in a certain country to realize your career dream? This step must be chosen carefully because it plays an important role in providing the necessary knowledge when actually entering the profession.
- Make a complete plan and consult with family, friends, information from schools provided directly or indirectly. From here you can receive useful advice for your future plans.
- Once you have chosen the right environment to nurture your future career dreams, you will begin to build specific roadmaps to strive to achieve that dream.
Hopefully what I have introduced above will be really useful for you during this period.
